Israel says raid kills Gazan behind Egypt border attack

Israeli air strikes on Wednesday killed a Gaza teenager and a militant who the army said was a "global jihad" operative behind a deadly ambush on Israel's border with Egypt.

The two deaths raised to eight the number of Palestinians killed in three days of bloodshed in and around Gaza, while militants have fired scores of rockets at the Jewish state, one of which scored a direct hit on a border police outpost, wounding four.

On Wednesday evening, two Palestinian youths were wounded in an airstrike on a Hamas training site in northern Gaza. A second attack at another Hamas training camp in Nuseirat in the centre of the territory left no casualties.

The Israeli military said its aircraft "targeted two terror sites in the northern Gaza Strip. Direct hits were confirmed."

"The targeting is in response to over 75 rockets that were fired at Israel during the past three days," it said.

An earlier strike hit a farm in the Zeitun neighbourhood, just east of Gaza City, killing 14-year-old Moamen al-Adam and seriously wounding his father, medics said. Another two people were also wounded.

An Israeli military spokeswoman told AFP that "during the day, rockets were fired at Israel from a populated civilian area in the northern Gaza Strip."

"This afternoon Israeli army aircraft targeted a rocket launching squad in this area," she said.

Earlier on Wednesday, a missile strike on a motorcycle in the southern border city of Rafah killed 21-year-old Ghaleb Ermilat, whom locals said was a militant of the Islamist movement Hamas which rules the territory.

The Israeli military said he was a "global jihad operative" who was behind a deadly ambush along the Israeli-Egyptian border on Monday morning that killed an Israeli civilian and sparked a firefight in which two of the gunmen were killed.

A third is believed to have fled back to Sinai.

The army said that besides Ermilat, another "global jihad terror operative" involved in Monday's ambush was seriously wounded in the raid, naming him as Mohammed Rashdan, a Rafah resident born in 1984.

It said Ermilat and Rashdan were members of Tawhid wal Jihad, a "global jihad terror movement, that is responsible for ongoing terror attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers."

"Rashdan's terror activities included weapon transfers, supplying explosive devices to terror operatives, firing rockets at Israel, sniper and mortar fire, and smuggling terror operatives to and from Gaza," the army said in a statement.

Ermilat and Rashdan had planned the ambush and were "actively involved in planning another attack," it said.

On Tuesday, a previously unknown Islamist group claimed responsibility for the ambush in a video carried by a US-based monitoring service, SITE Intelligence.

Made by the "Mujahedeen Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem," the clip showed two gunmen standing in front of Al-Qaeda's black flag saying they were poised to carry out an attack against Israel.

One claimed to be from Egypt, while the other said he was from Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, there was no let-up in the violence around Gaza on Wednesday, with at 39 rockets and mortars hitting the Jewish state, causing damage to several buildings.

A police spokeswoman told AFP that eight people were being treated for shock.

Overnight, the air force carried out seven raids, with Palestinian security sources saying they had hit a training centre used by Hamas militants and several naval police outposts.

In total, 45 rockets hit Israel on Tuesday, with one scoring a direct hit on an Israeli border police outpost north of Gaza.

All 45 rockets were claimed by the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, in a rare show of force. Previously, the group had been observing a de facto truce on rocket attacks.

As the violence rumbled on, a senior Gaza official told AFP that Egypt was in contact with Israel and the militant groups in a bid to restore calm.

"The Palestinian factions are ready to return to the calm as long as Israel stops its attacks," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Giora Eiland, Israel's former national security adviser, said he believed Hamas would "find a way to calm things down ... in the next two or three days after proving to the other factions that it is capable of acting against Israel."

"Neither Hamas nor Israel has any interest in provoking an escalation in the short term," he told public radio.

The crew of China's Shenzhou 9 space docking mission met reporters today (June 15) at the country's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center ahead of Saturday's planned launch at 6:37 p.m. local time (6:37 a.m. EDT or 1037 GMT). The three astronauts, or taikonauts as China's spaceflyers are known, include male crewmembers Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and the country's first woman to fly in space: the 34-year-old Liu Yang.

"I am grateful to the motherland and the people," Liu Yang said in a press conference according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. "I feel honored to fly into space on behalf of hundreds of millions of female Chinese citizens."

Liu and her crewmates will blast off atop a Long March 2F rocket and fly their Shenzhou 9 space capsule to China's Tiangong 1 laboratory module, which is a prototype space station that has been orbiting Earth since last September. It is China's fourth human spaceflight since 2003 and the first to actually rendezvous with a target in orbit.

The Shenzhou 9 astronauts are expected to perform at least two docking tests, one manual and the other automatic, and spend several days living and working inside the Tiangong 1 lab, said Wu Ping, spokeswoman for the China Manned Space Engineering Office that oversees China's human spaceflight program. China's fourth space crew revealed

Liu and her two crewmates are all former pilots with the People's Liberation Army and members of the Communist Party of China, Xinhua reported.

As China's first woman to fly in space, Liu was selected from a field? female military pilots to join China's astronaut corps. She joined China's Air Force in 1997 and served in the Wuhan Flight Unit before being selected for the astronaut program.

Another female Chinese pilot, Wang Yaping, was also in the running to fly on the Shenzhou 9 crew. Liu currently holds the rank of major, Xinhua reported. [Women in Space: A Gallery of Firsts]

"China's first female astronaut in space ? will be the 56th woman to fly into space out of the more than 500 people that have made it into orbit worldwide," said space history and artifacts expert Robert Pearlman, editor of collectSPACE.com, a SPACE.com partner site. "The first woman in space, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was launched on June 16, 1963. If Shenzhou 9 launches on Saturday, it will be exactly 49 years to the day after Tereshkova's historic first flight."

IBM's water-cooled supercomputer saves energy and helps with your heating bill (video)

IBM builds hotwater cooled supercomputer, consumes 40 percent less energy

IBM's SuperMuc has had a good week. Not only has the three petaflop machine been listed as Europe's fastest supercomputer, but it's also apparently the first high performance computer that's entirely water-cooled. Rather than filling rooms with air conditioning units, water is piped around veins in each component, removing heat 4,000 times more efficiently than air. The hot water is then used to heat the buildings of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre where it lives, saving the facility $1.25 million per year. After the break we've got a video from Big Blue, unfortunately narrated by someone who's never learned how to pronounce the word "innovative."

Happy 70th birthday, Paul McCartney!

Kevin Winter / Kevin Winter / Getty Images

By Randee Dawn

Of course we still loved him when he was 64, and now that Paul McCartney has hit the milestone of turning 70, who says we can't love him even more?

McCartney rose to prominence as the "cute" Beatle in the 1960s, both as lead singer in the iconic band and also one of its principal songwriters; he and John Lennon wrote the bulk of the?Beatles' songs?and are considered one of rock-'n'-roll's preeminent teams. When the band split up in the 1970s, each of the four Beatles took their own solo recording paths, and McCartney was the only member to chart with regular success in the ensuing years.

Post-Beatles he released two solo albums, "McCartney" and "Ram," which featured vocal assistance from his wife Linda; eventually, he brought on more musicians to coalesce his solo career into new band Wings, and released seven albums with the outfit throughout the '70s, scoring hits with songs like "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Band on the Run."

Since then, he's continued to release solo albums, his most recent being "Kisses on the Bottom," which came out early in 2012. But he's also got several classical albums under his belt and even has releases under multiple pseudonyms -- he was Percy "Thrills" Thrillington for the instrumental album version of "Ram" and he collaborated with electronica producer Youth as "The Fireman."

Over the years, McCartney has been married three times (most recently in 2011), had a minor planet named after him, a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth, an honorary doctorate in music from Yale and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He will close the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony on July 27.?

The Guinness Book of World Records calls him the "most successful composer and recording artist of all time," and he has sold over 100 million albums and singles.

Clearly, Paul McCartney has a lot to celebrate. Happy birthday, Sir Paul!
