Kentuckians encouraged to 'move to improve' arthritis conditions ...

Friday, January 18, 2013

Arthritis remains a serious public health concern, creating pain and suffering, work absenteeism and diminished quality of life. Keeping up with physical activity ? an integral piece of managing the condition ? can be more difficult this time of year.
?

With that in mind, the Kentucky Department for Public Health is emphasizing programs designed to alleviate arthritis symptoms, as well as lower risk for developing the disease, promoting the importance of arthritis management and reminding citizens to take advantage of arthritis services in their communities.
?

?Physical activity is key to arthritis management. Yet, for many living with the condition, exercise isn?t a part of their daily lives, or is more difficult this time of year as we spend less time outside and our schedules get busier,? said Dr. Stephanie Mayfield Gibson, Kentucky?s public health commissioner. ?We want to remind the public of the many accessible services all across the state aimed at lessening the burden of arthritis. These disease management workshops emphasize the importance of being active and are extremely helpful in managing or even reversing the effects of arthritis.?
?

Arthritis, a term used to describe more than 100 different conditions that affect joints and other parts of the body, affects numerous people around the world. According to the 2011 Kentucky Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, about one in three Kentucky adults or over 1 million adults reported that a health care provider had diagnosed them as having arthritis. Furthermore, the survey found that 55 percent of Kentuckians with arthritis are limited in their daily activities, and 42 percent reported they are ?physically inactive.?
?

Last fall, the Department for Public Health received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help combat this condition in Kentucky. Public Health and the Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living are working together to offer Chronic Disease Self-Management Program workshops through all 15 Area Agencies on Aging and Independent Living. A workshop is a six-week program to help people develop the skills and confidence to manage their arthritis and other chronic diseases like heart disease or diabetes on a day-to-day basis.
?

For example, participants in these programs learn to manage symptoms of pain and fatigue, and reduce frustration or worry about their health. CDSMP and other evidence-based arthritis programs, such as the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program and Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, are offered in several communities through local health departments, local senior citizen centers, Family Health Centers and fitness centers.
?

?Excess weight can contribute to both the onset and progression of arthritis,? said Jennye Grider, coordinator of the state?s arthritis program. ?According to the CDC, weight loss of just 11 pounds can decrease the occurrence of new cases of knee osteoarthritis. Physical activity can also decrease pain and complications for people who already have arthritis.?
?

Grider also noted that arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 21 million adults.
?

?Though arthritis can be debilitating and painful, you have to move to improve,? said Grider. ?Even light walking can improve mobility while reducing pain, stiffness and fatigue.?
?

Kentucky is one of 12 states funded through CDC?s arthritis program, which supports evidence-based community interventions to reduce pain and disability and improve the quality of life for people with arthritis.

94% The Sessions

All Critics (162) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (153) | Rotten (10) | DVD (1)

Thanks to Lewin's light but assured touch, The Sessions never wears its theological preoccupations heavily, instead allowing transcendence to creep up on the audience quietly.

A very different kind of love story, breaking taboos lightly, with sensitivity and humor.

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

The Sessions finally proves that Hollywood can take physical incapacity and/or sex far more seriously than it does the potential side effects of shooting so many people on screen so often.

A touching gem of a movie largely thanks to subtly dynamic performances from Helen Hunt and John Hawkes.

Hugely enjoyable, warm-hearted and frequently laugh-out-loud funny disability drama with a superb script and a pair of terrific performances from John Hawkes and Helen Hunt.

Lewin, who has fought his own lifelong polio battle, handles tricky material with a gentle, empathetic touch.

Formulaic but uplifting, positive and accessible.

In its barest form this is a traditional rites-of-passage yarn, dealing in first love and lost innocence, and even with a candid discussion of sex, it's mostly sweetness and light.

Few movies are so frank about the sexual mechanics of the disabled ...

All thinking viewers will come away with a better understanding as to how the seemingly different amongst us are really just the one-in-the-same when getting up close and personal.

For the most part, an authentically subversion take on fringe sexuality.

The Sessions belongs completely to Hawkes, who disappears into the role of Mark O'Brien, delivering a stunning performance that illuminates what it means to be a whole person.

This is one of the best, and certainly one of the best-acted, films of the year. I can't think of another film that mixed compassion and carnality in such an eloquent way.

The laughs are always gentle, which is descriptive of the film as a whole, as it strives to reconnect cinematic sex with shared humanity.

Vera is something of a missed opportunity here.

A movie about sex that shows a whole lot of sex, but isn't sex-obsessed. The Sessions grabs you in the heart rather than the loins.

An inspiring tale that celebrates the human spirit, underscores the value of connections, and laughs at the beautifully embarrassing urges that make us what we are.

Deeply moving. The Oscar-worthy (John) Hawkes invests his character with a sense of grace and humor that nullifies any potential pity. This is a great movie for adults and even for older adolescents.

It is rare to watch a movie where sex is treated with maturity, religion is treated with respect and characters are so heart-warmingly written and portrayed.

Mayor protecting pot dispensaries from the law

Becky Yeh - California correspondent ? (OneNewsNow.com)
Thursday, January 17, 2013

Even after federal prosecutors have taken legal action against them, the mayor of a California city continues to support medical marijuana dispensaries.

San Diego's newly elected mayor, Bob Filner, has asked police to ignore city zoning violations and stop prosecution of medical marijuana dispensaries. Enforcement of the ordinance approved by the city council in October 2010 is the main local law officers depend on to fight the mischief surrounding the legal marijuana markets.?It was shutting down several facilities.

The Democrat says he supports medical marijuana and wants to ensure the "utmost safeguards" surrounding dispensaries. He plans to propose a new law to regulate them.

Lambert, JamesJames Lambert, an author and spokesman for MarijuanaHarmsFamilies.com, directs Mayor Filner to federal law.

"Bob Filner is the most radical and the most leftist mayor this city of San Diego has ever had," he submits. "What Mayor Filner needs to understand is it's still illegal in the federal government to smoke pot."

Examiner.com reports that though the zoning law that prohibits dispensary locations within 1,000 feet of schools, libraries, and youth centers can now be broken, Filner has vowed to make sure that such facilities will not be near areas where children gather, nor will they be able to "infringe on the quality of life in any neighborhood."

Lambert points out that the restrictions are there for a reason.

"Now while we have medical marijuana here, which is very easy to get, people need to understand yes -- there should be zoning restrictions as far as proximity to schools, as far as proximity to certain housing areas, etcetera," the author notes.

Federal attorneys have targeted marijuana dispensaries for raking in profits, for selling the drug illegally to minors, for opening shop near schools, and for illegal drug trafficking.

Google, the Company that has Practically Destroyed Print Advertising, Wins $1 Million in USA Today Print Advertising Contest

USA Today has announced the winner of $1 million in free advertising in its contest to encourage creativity in print advertising: Google.

It?s hard to know why USA Today would?ve allowed Google to enter in the first place. Google has done more than anyone to destroy print media by outright stealing its revenue over the past 10 years, acting as little more than an electronic middle man that skims profits.

Moreover, it?s a smug, irritating move for Google to enter the contest at all ? and they won it with a smug, self-congratulatory ad for Google Plus:

The winning ad, which ran in October, was simple. It reprinted a paragraph from a newspaper article reporting that the Dalai Lama had ?scrapped plans? to attend the 80th birthday celebration of a fellow Nobel laureate, Desmond M. Tutu of South Africa, because his visa request was not granted.

The ad updated the article by crossing out words like ?scrapped plans? and replacing them with ?joined? and ?via Hangout.?

Hey, the Dali Lama goes digital, how hip. What was the average age of the judges, about 75?

The two runner ups were Save the Children and an ad for a new toy, Nanoblock.

Larry Kramer, president and publisher at USA Today said ?I was upset that agencies weren?t doing enough print creative and putting their best and brightest people on digital platforms?I?m worried the skill set is atrophying and wanted to do something to remind the world that print creative matters.?

Congratulations. He?s just proven that all your corporation has to do is loot the print world and strip it of its ability to hire competitive staff, and you, too, can come out on top.

Obama seeks to enhance gun background checks

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is asking Congress to expand background checks on gun buyers to include private sales and is using his executive authority to increase the information available in data banks in the background check system. The White House calls background checks the most efficient and effective way to keep guns away from dangerous individuals.

Obama wants Congress to close loopholes that permit private gun transactions to occur without background checks. The White House says nearly 40 percent of gun sales are conducted by private individuals now exempt from checking the backgrounds of buyers.

Obama is also ordering federal agencies to make "relevant data" available to the federal background check system and to remove barriers that might prevent states from providing information, particularly mental health data, for background checks.
