Small Business Week ? Scrapbooking at the kitchen table ...

Todays post for Small Business Week is by Kerry who recently set up Scrapbookerry, selling handmade keepsakes for gifts and special occasions. Here she explains to us what scrapbooking is all about and how she found her niche.

?????????????????????????????????????-

I run Scrapbookerry, and have been since 2011, but that isn?t the start of my story. I have always loved photography and came across a very raw form of scrapbooking for the very first time when I was still at school, my friends and I used to cover exercise books and write our favourite songs in the books and add pictures from the various parties and sleepovers that we attended and give to each other at the end of the school years. It was great fun but once I left school I never did anything like it again.

Although I did carry on taking lots of pictures and was obsessed with my camera and the way my photos were stored.

Six years ago an American friend invited me to a home scrapbooking party, at this evening we had to take 6 pictures and we made a scrapbook page with these pictures. She taught us about the use of acidic products against our photos, why pictures turn yellow, in those sticky albums and what is good for a photo and what is bad for a photo. I was instantly hooked. Anyone that knows me knows that if there is a fire in my house you get out my photos! It is one of the most important items I own bar my family. So to learn all this information about how to keep these pictures save had me hooked.

Before I knew it scrapbooking was a hobby that was turning into an obsession. I loved organising my photos, and getting them all into safe albums. As soon as I found out we were having our first baby I knew that this child?s love was going to be scrapbooked and I could not wait to get started. To date I think I have over 7000 photos of my son, he is nearly four and albums and albums started not all completed I have to confess of different things and events that have happened in his short little life.

Once he was born, I had a perfect reason to develop my scrapbooking into mini albums, as these were perfect presents for grandparents, aunties and uncles, godparents and friends who live far away. I could make gorgeous squash books instead of cards full of up to date pictures of my son so that all of our friends were up to date with his progress. I did this for about a year and then gradually friends and family were asking if I could make the same album that I had made for them so they could give it to their friend, grandparent, or auntie and uncle.?

I carried on doing this for a couple of years before I really felt that actually there was a business in these albums it was a slow progress. But the requests were getting bigger and I was also being asked to make things for big events, for new babies, children?s christening and naming days and also to make one off handmade pieces for peoples weddings. These are all events that people want to record in their lives they never want to forget these moments and I love to help people to keep these memories alive with items that are unique to them, because they have been custom made and are all made in photo safe products that will keep the photos in their best condition for as long as possible. To me that is the best that I can give people, keeping their memories alive for future generations.?
