Re: Might as well... Any questions about Washington State?

The BEST guitar store in Seattle, in Fremont, actually, is Dusty Strings. It's an acoustic store, but it has the best acoustic selection of any store I've ever set foot in. And the staff is fantastic. By far one of the best guitar store staffs I've ever met.

Quote:

I've thought about moving to Seattle. Would the rain get to me after a while?

It depends. I lived here for 18 years before I moved to Phoenix. People say that the rain is depressing, but I found Arizona way more depressing. Every day of the year looks the exact same. It can be December and it's sunny outside. July, sunny outside. It's so monotonous. Washington actually has seasons, albeit, a lot of rain. But I love it. It's been raining here hard tonight and I went out and stood in it for a few minutes. I thoroughly enjoy it. Keep in mind, if the rain is too much for you, the whole eastern side of the state is actually a desert and has great weather;not to mention four real seasons. Cold as hell in the winter, perfect in the summer. If you're bummed out, take a trip to one of the many great little towns along the Columbia River and soak up the sun. leftyguitarman is online now ? With World title in hand, no ?new mission? for Simpson as London Games loom

"I don't know that it will ever truly sink in." That's how Jennifer "Jenny" Simpson describes how it feels, three months afterwards, to be the World champion at 1500m.

"It was a pure sense of joy, because it was a success that came without the burden of expectation. I wasn't the one everyone was depending on to come home with a medal. With some people, there's a sense of relief, but for me it was just an incredible, fun experience."

With 2011 drawing to a close and the Olympic year looming, Simpson and her coach, former international Juli Benson, looked back at what went right and what went wrong in 2011 and decided, as Simpson says, "There's not a lot to change. We did a good job, let's keep doing that. There's no new mission, just to be consistent, stay strong, stay healthy, and get to the starting line."

Simpson draws a parallel to her collegiate career at the University of Colorado, where, as Jennifer Barringer, she ran 3:59 for 1500m. Coach Mark Wetmore told her then, "Now you'll never be an underdog."

Goal ? to channel expectations gracefully

"You wave goodbye to those days when people don't expect anything of you," Simpson says. "It's unrealistic to expect things will be the same. But now I have the opportunity to channel all that expectation gracefully into another successful season, instead of seeing it as having some sort of order to fill."

After graduating in 2009, she lost most of 2010 to injury, making 2011 her first complete professional season. Her startling maturity comes from her cultivation of a mental jujitsu which absorbs setbacks and pressure and turns them to her advantage. When, for example, the topic of her winning time in Daegu is raised - 4:05.40, the slowest in championship history - Simpson says, "There's not one person who wouldn't love to win a World Championships medal." She doesn't add the obvious conclusion: if it's so easy to win in 4:05, why didn't someone else do it? Speaking to a softball team near her training base of Monument, Colorado, where she lives and trains, Simpson said, "Don't let anyone say you won by accident. Don't let people take away from what you've accomplished. Once you've done it, you own it."

It's no surprise, then, that Simpson displays no concern about entering the Olympic year as the reigning World champion. "Managing the stress and expectation is the key," she says. "Training is the least of the challenge."

First, she points out, she will need to get to the Olympics, no small feat in itself. The United States Olympic Team Trials will likely see three sub-4:00 1500m runners (Simpson, Anna Pierce, and Christin Wurth-Thomas) in the final, not to mention 2011 Samsung Diamond League winner Morgan Uceny.

"I had to run 4:05 [in June] just to make the U.S. team" for Daegu, Simpson points out. "The pressure at the U.S. Championships is a great vetting process for the same pressures and challenges at the World Championships and Olympics. It's a different dynamic. The people who are going to do well [at the global meets] are the ones who not only race well, but can handle that stress. We can choose to use that [Trials] experience, or worry about whether we can make the team."

Admiration for rivals

Another recurring theme in Simpson's conversation is her considered admiration for her rivals. Her steeplechase career, which included a 9th place finish in the 2008 Olympic final and 5th in the 2009 World Championships final, is intertwined with that of Pierce. Starting as collegians in 2007, the two traded the American record through 2008 and 2009 and lowered it more than fifteen seconds, to Simpson's 9:12.15 set in Berlin.

"The rivalry was exciting, and it put me on the map," Simpson says. She has similar praise for Uceny, who won the U.S. title in 2011 and joined Simpson in the final in Daegu. "Morgan had such great consistency" in 2011, she says. "She was on for every race. That's another area where I could stand to improve."

When Pierce graduated, Simpson had to face Sally Kipyego regularly in conference and national meets when the Kenyan 10,000m silver medallist was running at Texas Tech University. "If I hadn't had to race Sally so often, I might have been able to settle," she explains. "She forced me to train so hard, and when she did amazing things, I would say, I can do this too." Watching Kipyego's silver medal race in Daegu reinforced Simpson's conviction that a medal was possible in her own race. The pair then finished 1-2 in the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York, where Kipyego told Simpson, "I was screaming and crying watching your race" in Daegu.

Unlike Uceny and Pierce, who train with the Mammoth Track Club in the mountains of California, or Kipyego, who trains with the Oregon Track Club in Eugene, Simpson is not part of an organised training group. Benson is the coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and Simpson lives in nearby Monument. She works as a volunteer assistant for Benson, and says, "I don't feel alone in Monument. I have great medical and training support from the Olympic Training Center [in Colorado Springs] and they understand Olympic sport athletes. I have access to the Air Force Academy facilities, and between them I have two great communities. [Benson] has a couple of post-collegiate athletes in the Air Force World Class Athlete Program," a developmental program run by the U.S. military, "and I run with the cadets on my easy days. I get to train with people as good or better than I am, and I never have to worry about racing them."

Simpson adds, "I was worried about how a military academy would handle having a woman training with them, but if you work hard and are good at what you do, they respect that no matter who you are. They want the fight and the win, and if you have both, they respect you."

Simpson sees her challenge in the coming year as simply arriving at the London start line healthy and relaxed. Duplicating Daegu's winning run isn't even a consideration.

"I never think about race strategy," she says. "Planning how to position myself in the pack is dependent on the decisions of other people. Juli and I meet in the middle on this; she convinced me that it's worthwhile to practice certain race scenarios in order to be prepared for them, and to understand that there are points in the race where it's important to have a sense of where you are."

As a result of this, and of her relatively short career as a miler, Simpson says, "I still feel like a total rookie in this event. I finished this year feeling like I can do it so much better. I feel like I still have a lot to learn, and that really excites me."

Lions coach doesn't care who Packers may rest

updated 5:09 p.m. ET Dec. 26, 2011

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz isn't fretting over circumstances beyond his control.

He said Monday he doesn't worry if the Green Bay team the Lions will face on Sunday at Lambeau Field will rest key players now that the Packers have clinched home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

Schwartz also said he isn't concerned about possible playoff scenarios for his Lions, who secured their first postseason berth since the 1999 season with a 38-10 victory over San Diego on Saturday.

The Lions are in the running for the No. 5 seed in the NFC, which would mean playing at the winner of Sunday's game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys.

"Particularly being a wild card like we are, to get through the NFC, you're going to have to win three games," Schwartz said. "All three of those are going to be good teams. The only thing we can do is worry about ourselves and preparing the very best we can this week and not worrying about scenarios or all those other things. They'll have a team for us to play. We'll be ready for them."

Schwartz said the Lions' preparation for Green Bay won't be impacted much by the possibility backup quarterback Matt Flynn could start if Aaron Rodgers is kept out of harm's way.

The Packers played without four injured starters, including offensive tackles Bryan Bulaga and Chad Clifton, in a 35-21 victory over Chicago on Sunday night. The Lions haven't beaten Green Bay on the road since 1991.

"We can't control who they play or what objectives they have in the game," Schwartz said. "It doesn't change our objectives or anything else. Obviously, if we're preparing for a different quarterback, you need to be ready for that, but their offense isn't going to change. They are what they are. It's not like some other situations we've seen. You go to Minnesota, another division opponent, you have one quarterback and then a very different skill set in a different quarterback."

Schwartz gave no indication that the Lions might rest some nicked-up players against Green Bay.

"It's football," he said. "We're going to try to win the game. Any game they put in front of us, we're going to try our best to win."

Schwartz dismissed the notion the Lions are happy to merely be in the playoffs after 10 consecutive losing seasons, including 0-16 three years ago. He noted recent history, with three of the last six Super Bowl champions being wild cards.

"There is an advantage to playing at home and getting byes and things like that, but it's certainly been proven that it can be done," Schwartz said. "A lot of that starts this week. You look at those teams, it wasn't just what they did when they got in the playoffs, it's where they were at the end of the season. Green Bay last year needed to win their last two just to get in.

"That's why it puts a little bit more importance on games like this. You want to go in with momentum, you want to go in with wins, you want to go in healthy. To be in is obviously the most important thing. After that, everybody has a chance."

Markets edge higher despite lackluster US data (AP)

LONDON ? European markets closed higher Friday ahead of the Christmas break even though a batch of disappointing U.S. economic figures reined in some of the recent optimism over the state of the world's largest economy.

Figures showing that consumer spending and personal income rose by a modest 0.1 percent in November were below market expectations, while the headline 3.8 percent increase in durable goods orders last month masked a decline in a crucial investment measure, benefiting from big orders for Boeing aircraft.

The figures offset some of the optimism in markets about the U.S. economy following a run of largely positive data. Since Thursday, investors have taken heart from figures showing that the number of initial jobless claims in the U.S. unexpectedly fell 4,000 last week to 364,000, the lowest level since April 2008.

Those figures had raised hopes that the U.S. economy got through its soft patch earlier this year and may be poised for stronger-than-anticipated growth in the fourth quarter.

"This doesn't change the overall view too much but it is somewhat deflating," said Jennifer Lee, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets.

That was evident in the markets, where stocks in Europe gave up many of their earlier gains and Wall Street opened lower than predicted in futures markets. Trading activity was muted as the traditional holiday slowdown began in earnest.

In Europe, Germany's DAX closed 0.5 percent higher at 5,878.93 while the CAC-40 in France rose 1 percent to 3,102.09. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares, which only traded for a half day, closed up 1 percent at 5,512.70.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.6 percent at 12,246 while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose the same rate to 1,262.

Trading was fairly lackluster in the currency markets too, with the euro down 0.1 percent at $1.3048 and the dollar 0.1 percent lower at 78.09 yen.

While the U.S. economy has been the dominant driver in markets the past couple of days, Europe's debt crisis is likely to remain the key market focus next year.

There were reminders Friday of the underlying problems afflicting the 17-nation eurozone.

Figures showed that eurozone banks stashed euro347 billion ($453 billion) overnight with the European Central Bank on Thursday, in another sign that Europe's debt crisis is still putting pressure on the banking system despite massive central bank support. The figure announced Friday is the highest for 2011, topping euro346.4 billion earlier this month.

The large deposits come despite Wednesday's massive central bank credit operation, in which the ECB let banks borrow as much as they wanted for up to 3 years. As a result 523 banks took euro489 billion, the largest ECB loan operation in the 13-year history of the euro.

Earlier in Asia, China's benchmark in Shanghai gained 0.9 percent to 2,204.78 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.4 percent to 18,629.17. Japan's financial markets were closed for a public holiday.

Oil prices tracked equities higher ? benchmark crude for February delivery was up 44 cents to $99.97 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield wants new pitch to urban growth panel

WHAT'S HAPPENED

Mayor Ron Littlefield asked in October for the county urban growth committee to meet. The committee met two weeks ago and voted 12-5 not to hear a proposal to open talks on expanding urban growth boundaries within the county.

Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield said this week he plans to ask Hamilton County officials to reconvene the urban growth boundary committee, even though they shot down the idea two weeks ago.

"Just having one meeting and one vote is not the end of the story," Littlefield said. "That's the beginning of the story."

County Mayor Jim Coppinger responded by saying the law does give the mayor the right to call the committee together again. But he said the law also requires the city to make a proposal and for the committee to vote on that proposal. He noted at the last meeting the city did not have a specific proposal.

"It's an acting committee," he said. "It's not so much a planning committee."

The urban growth boundary committee met two weeks ago and voted 12-5 not to hear any kind of proposal about expanding the boundaries for cities within Hamilton County. The boundaries dictate how far and where cities can annex property.

The boundaries were set in 2001 by the cities and counties after the state Legislature mandated the move to try to circumvent quarreling over city expansion.

Littlefield said he now has a strategy for the next meeting.

"Now we know who is on the urban growth committee," he said. "We'll begin conversing with them."

But several members of the committee who voted against Chattanooga's proposal said Friday a conversation would not turn their vote.

Signal Mountain Mayor Bill Lusk said he is surprised the mayor would not have known who was on the committee since the majority of the committee was made up of all the mayors in the county.

"I suspect he knew the potential committee members long before that," he said.

And Lusk said he doesn't think his vote will change.

"I do not believe the town of Signal Mountain should have a voice in Chattanooga's expansion," he said, and Signal Mountain doesn't need to move its boundaries at this time.

Lakesite Mayor Ken Wilkerson said the City Commission voted unanimously against the expansion of Chattanooga's borders.

"We are totally against any proposal or plan by the city of Chattanooga on the west side of the Tennessee River," he said. "Especially if it encroaches our locks in Lakesite."

Red Bank Mayor Monty Millard said he believes residents of affected annexation areas should have a right to vote on any annexation of their areas. And he said he is staunch in his decision against Chattanooga's plan to change the boundaries.

"I don't think it's going to do any good for me to change my vote," he said. "Even with a call from Mayor Littlefield."

AT&T drops T-Mobile bid, Microsoft tries to nix antitrust case

AT&T has dropped its bid to take over T-Mobile USA for $39 billion in the wake of opposition from government regulators who say the deal would violate antitrust laws.

The move by AT&T -- announced Monday afternoon -- was a stunning outcome for the telecom giant that had sought to buy Bellevue-based T-Mobile USA -- an American subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. AT&T had underestimated the opposition it would face from government regulators and from competitors who feared what would become of the highly competitive wireless industry if the merger went through. The deal would have created the nation's largest carrier.

AT&T's decision to scrap its merger plan leaves T-Mobile in limbo. T-Mobile USA?s parent, Deutsche Telekom, is getting $3 billion in cash by the end of the year. And T-Mobile USA will get what Deutsche Telekom calls a ?large package of advanced wireless solutions spectrum? and a seven-year national roaming agreement that will allow T-Mobile to bring faster service to Seattle and other big cities.

The deal gives T-Mobile more time to figure out its future, including upgrading its network and finding a new partner.

Microsoft says that Novell Inc. has insufficient evidence to reasonably support its antitrust lawsuit against the Redmond software giant now that a jury has failed to reach a verdict in the case.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has used the annual Consumer Electronics Show as a platform for CEO Steve Ballmer to showcase his company?s latest hardware and software offerings.

But times are changing, and apparently Ballmer and Microsoft no longer need the exposure from the big tech trade show that it has dominated in the past with presentations and exhibits. Microsoft will make the upcoming 2012 CES show its last because it is relying more heavily on its own marketing campaigns and retail stores to reach its customers.

Here are a few things I am catching up on this week:

The Seattle Mariners are valued at $641 million, according to a Seattle divorce trial judge handling the case of Mariners minority owner Chris Larson, who made his fortune as a programmer at Microsoft

The Seattle Times reports that based on the $593 million sale of the Texas Rangers and $610 million sale of the Houston Astros this year, King Count Superior Court Judge William Downing estimated the Mariners were worth $641 million, considerably higher than the $449 million estimate by Forbes earlier this year.

Amazon?s Lovefilm division and Sony Pictures Television inked a content arrangement giving Lovefilm members in the UK exclusive streaming access to new and upcoming Sony Pictures titles like "The Social Network? and ?Salt.?

The deal between Lovefilm and Sony is the latest in a series of content deals in the UK. Others involve Warner Bros., Entertainment One, STUDIOCANAL, Disney, Momentum and Lionsgate.

The Most Memorable Spaceflight Stories of 2011 (SPACE.com)

This year was quite an eventful one in spaceflight, with many vessels launching toward the heavens ? and a few crashing back to Earth.

Here's a rundown of the top 11 spaceflight stories of 2011, from the last mission of NASA's venerable space shuttle program to China's first-ever docking of two spaceships in Earth orbit:

1. Satellites falling from the sky

The sky wasn't really falling in autumn 2011; it just seemed that way, with two defunct satellites plummeting to Earth out of control within a month of each other.

First came NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS. This 6.5-ton climate satellite, which was about the size of a school bus, launched in 1991 and was decommissioned in 2005. UARS then spent six years spiraling slowly toward our planet, finally plunging into the atmosphere above the Pacific Ocean Sept. 24.

Germany's 2.7-ton Roentgen Satellite, or ROSAT, followed closely on UARS' heels. This craft, which launched in 1990 to survey the heavens in X-rays and was shut down in 1999, fell back to Earth over the Indian Ocean Oct. 23.?

Neither satellite crash injured anyone. But the sky isn't done raining down huge pieces of space junk. Russia's failed Mars probe Phobos-Grunt will soon plummet to Earth, perhaps even before the year is out (see below). [Vote for the Best Spaceflight Story of 2011]

2. The end of the space shuttle era

This year also saw the last flight of an American icon. NASA's storied space shuttle program came to an end after 30 years of service when Atlantis touched down shortly before dawn July 21.

Atlantis' flight was the 135th space mission for the shuttle program, which began to take shape in 1972 and first launched to orbit in 1981. The shuttle accomplished a great deal during its long lifetime, helping to build the International Space Station and making spaceflight more routine than it had been.

However, the shuttle's record highlights that spaceflight remains a dangerous endeavor. Two of its 135 missions ended in tragedy, killing a total of 14 astronauts. The shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff in 1986, while Columbia broke up during re-entry in 2003. [NASA's Space Shuttle Program in Pictures: A Tribute]

The three remaining space-flown orbiters are now being prepped for display in museums. For now, NASA is dependent on Russian Soyuz vehicles to ferry its astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit. However, the agency hopes private companies can take over this orbital taxi service by 2017 or so.

3. A space first for China

Nov. 2 was a banner day for China and its space program. On that date, the nation successfully docked two robotic spacecraft in low-Earth orbit for the first time ever.

The mating of the two vehicles ? called?Shenzhou 8 and Tiangong 1?? was designed to test key technologies that China will use to assemble a space station in orbit. The country hopes to have a 66-ton manned station up and running by 2020.

And China won't rest on its laurels for long. The nation plans to launch two more docking missions during 2012, at least one of which will be manned.

4. 50 years of human spaceflight

The space shuttle program celebrated 30 years of spaceflight in 2011, but that anniversary took a back seat to a much bigger one this year: 50 years of human spaceflight.

Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space April 12, 1961, completing one Earth orbit in his tiny Vostok capsule before returning safely to terra firma less than two hours later. The United States launched its first spaceflyer just weeks later, sending Alan Shepard on a short suborbital flight May 5.

And the anniversaries didn't stop there. On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy made the speech that charted NASA's direction for years to come, announcing that the United States would put an astronaut on the moon before the end of the decade.

So while our future may be in the stars, this year spurred many spaceflight experts and observers to cast their gaze back through history.

5. The astronaut and the congresswoman

On Jan. 8, a gunman shot Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the head as she talked to constituents outside a Tucson grocery store. The attack left Giffords gravely wounded and six other people dead.

The tragedy reverberated beyond Arizona and the halls of Congress, reaching into low-Earth orbit. Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, was slated to command the STS-134 mission of the space shuttle Endeavour ? the second-to-last flight of the shuttle program ? just a few months after the shooting.

As Giffords made strides in her recovery, Kelly decided to take part in the mission. When Endeavour blasted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center May 16, Giffords was in the crowd.

Kelly retired in October with four spaceflights under his belt. Giffords continues to recuperate, and she's said she may consider a return to Congress if her condition improves enough.

6. NASA's uncertain future

In many ways, NASA had a great year in 2011. The agency launched three different planetary missions, rendezvoused with the huge asteroid Vesta and executed a comet flyby. And NASA's Kepler space telescope discovered more than 2,000 potential alien planets.

But the year also brought its share of transition and uncertainty. With the space shuttle fleet retired, NASA is now completely dependent on Russian Soyuz vehicles to ferry its astronauts to and from the International Space Station, at $63 million per seat. NASA wants American private spaceflight companies to take over this taxi service soon, but that probably won't happen until 2017 at the earliest, officials have said.

NASA's budget also keeps getting trimmed, as lawmakers look to cut federal spending across the board. The agency may get just $17.4 billion in fiscal year 2012, down from $18.5 billion in 2011.

The belt-tightening could threaten some of the agency's most ambitious and expensive projects, including the $8.8-billion James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In July, the House Appropriations Committee recommended canceling the huge instrument, which is billed as the muscular successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

Congress later restored funding for JWST, marking it as safe ? for now. The telescope is slated to launch in October 2018.

7. NASA's new rocket and spaceship

In 2010, President Barack Obama instructed NASA to work toward getting astronauts to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars by the mid-2030s. This year, the space agency laid out how it plans to reach these deep-space destinations.

The astronauts will ride aboard a new spaceship called the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, which NASA announced in May. The spacecraft is based heavily on the old Orion capsule concept, which NASA began developing as part of its moon-oriented Constellation program. The Obama Administration cancelled Constellation last year in favor of the asteroid-first plan.

In September, NASA revealed its Space Launch System (SLS), the $10-billion giant rocket that will lift Orion off the pad. In its early incarnations, the SLS will likely be capable of lofting 70 tons of payload, but NASA eventually wants to beef it up to carry 130 tons of material to space.

NASA hopes the Orion-SLS combo will be launching astronauts toward deep space by 2021.

8. Russia's space woes

2011 was a tough year for Russian spaceflight, as a string of high-profile mishaps plagued the country.

On Feb. 1, for example, a Rockot launch vehicle failed to deliver an Earth-observing satellite to the proper orbit. And on Aug. 18, a Proton rocket didn't place a $300-million communications satellite in the desired orbit.

Then, on Aug. 24, the unmanned Progress 44 supply ship crashed while hauling cargo to the International Space Station, doomed by a problem with the third stage of its Soyuz rocket. Russia uses a similar version of the Soyuz to launch astronauts to the space station, so manned flights were put on hold until the problem with the rocket could be identified and fixed. As a result, the orbiting lab operated with a skeleton crew of three astronauts for a stretch this autumn.

Finally, the $165-million Mars moon probe Phobos-Grunt got stuck in Earth orbit shortly after its Nov. 8 launch. The spacecraft's thrusters were supposed to fire to send it on a course for the Red Planet, but they never did so.

Phobos-Grunt is still circling our planet, its orbit getting lower and lower by the day. Most experts consider the probe lost, predicting that it will come crashing back into the atmosphere in mid-January, though it's tough to peg an exact date. [Photos: Russia's Failed Phobos-Grunt Mission]

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently threatened heavy fines or even criminal punishment for the people responsible for this series of embarrassing failures.

9. International Space Station is complete

After 13 years of construction work, the International Space Station finally reached a measure of completeness in 2011.

In March, the space shuttle Discovery delivered NASA's final contribution to the assembly of the orbiting lab, a new room called the Permanent Multipurpose Module. While Russia may attach one more module in the coming years, construction from a U.S. standpoint is now 100-percent done.

NASA and its international partners began building the orbiting lab in 1998. The 431-ton space station is as big as a football field and has about as much living space as a five-bedroom house. With an estimated price tag of $100 billion, the orbital outpost is the most expensive structure ever built.

10. NASA launches its biggest Mars rover

NASA launched its own Mars mission Nov. 26, less than three weeks after Russia's left the pad. But unlike Phobos-Grunt, the $2.5-billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission is speeding toward the Red Planet, apparently in perfect health.

MSL will drop the car-size Curiosity rover at Mars' huge Gale Crater in August 2012, using a rocket-powered sky crane to lower the robot to the planet's surface. Curiosity's main task is to assess whether the Gale Crater area is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life. [Photos: NASA's Curiosity Rover Launches to Mars]

The 1-ton rover carries 10 instruments to help it answer this question, including a rock-zapping laser and equipment designed to identify organic compounds ? carbon-based molecules that are the building blocks of life as we know it.

11. Private spaceflight makes strides

A private space race is developing among companies that hope to ferry NASA astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit in the post-shuttle era, and 2011 saw that race heat up.

Several different companies made strides this year in their spacecraft development, ticking off key milestones that NASA laid out for them as a condition of continued funding. The chief contenders ? firms such as Blue Origin, SpaceX, Boeing and Sierra Nevada ? generally say they should be ready to fly by 2015 or 2016.

Private suborbital spaceflight also made progress this year. The space tourism company Virgin Galactic conducted more glide tests of its SpaceShipTwo vehicle, and company officials have said that in-vehicle rocket tests should start in the first half of 2012.

During commercial operations, SpaceShipTwo will take off from Spaceport America, and this commercial facility really began taking shape in 2011. Further, scientists put money down on the research potential of suborbital spaceflight this year, buying seats on SpaceShipTwo and XCOR Aerospace's Lynx vehicle.

Ex-hacker testifies about reporting U.S. Army leaks suspect (Reuters)

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) ? A former computer hacker testified on Tuesday that he led authorities to the suspected source of the biggest leak of classified documents in U.S. history after several days of online chats with Bradass87, an alias for Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning.

The 24-year-old Manning is charged with downloading thousands of classified or confidential files from the military's Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, or SIPRNet. Those files are thought to have later appeared on WikiLeaks, a whistleblower website.

Former hacker Adrian Lamo said Manning initially contacted him by email in May 2010 and the two began an online conversation about diplomatic cables and military video the Army private allegedly downloaded from the classified network he used as a member of the 10th Mountain Division in Iraq.

Within a day Lamo contacted Timothy Webster, a former Army counterintelligence agent, to seek advice on who to approach about the information he was getting from Manning.

"What I saw in the chats appeared to be an admission of acts so egregious that it required that response," Lamo said when questioned about why he had decided to contact military authorities about Manning's conduct.

Lamo's testimony came on the fifth day of a military hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to court-martial Manning for aiding the enemy and other charges in connection with the massive leak of documents. He faces life imprisonment if convicted of the most serious charge.

Military prosecutors have sought to link Manning to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, introducing online chat logs that they said appeared to be conversations between Assange and Manning. The logs discussed sending and receiving U.S. government information.

In 2010, WikiLeaks released several hundred thousand U.S. military documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables.

Manning's defense attorneys have attempted to portray him as an emotionally troubled young man whose behavioral problems should have prompted his superiors to revoke his access to classified information.

Witnesses have said Manning sent an email to his sergeant saying confusion over his gender identity was seriously hurting his life, work and ability to think. Manning had created a female alter-ego online, Breanna Manning, according to testimony at the hearing.

During Lamo's testimony on Tuesday, tension between him and Manning was obvious. Manning, dressed in camouflage fatigues, slouched in his chair at times and at other times stared straight ahead, avoiding eye contact with Lamo.

'TREAT THIS AS A CONFESSION'

Lamo said he confirmed the identity of Bradass87 by becoming friends with Manning on Facebook and by confirming that he had a password and login for the Army's online knowledge portal.

Lamo, who pleaded guilty to the felony hacking of The New York Times' computer system in 2004, acknowledged under cross-examination by Manning's attorney that he is a minister in the Universal Life Church and had told the person in an online chat to "treat this as a confession."

"They were coming to you for moral and emotional support?" defense attorney David Coombs asked.

"Perhaps to bond, yes," said Lamo, who acknowledged suffering depression, having drug problems and being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a disorder that makes social interactions difficult.

Computer crimes investigator Patrick Edwards said Lamo gave authorities a removable computer hard drive, a laptop and two thumbdrives with details from his chats with Manning.

Investigator David Shaver said the chat logs from the computers of Manning and Lamo were identical except for occasional network drops that affected one computer and not the other. One set of chat logs had been modified slightly and may have been those leaked to the media, he said.

In other testimony on Tuesday, Manning's supervisor in Iraq testified that she recommended he be disciplined and barred from handling classified information following a spate of violent confrontations, including one in which he punched her in the face.

Former Specialist Jihrleah Showman said she also had recommended that Manning not be deployed to Iraq because of concerns about his behavior, but her suggestion was not followed and it was unclear whether her assessments had been passed along to the company commander.

Energy Efficient Light Bulb Tips (PHOTOS)

Given the man light bulb choices available today and the new bulb efficiency standards that are set to go into effect in 2012, selecting the right bulb for your home can difficult. Below, check out the tips from the Natural Resources Defense Council for selecting the light bulb that both looks best and is energy efficient.

The efficiency standards that are set to take effect on January 1, 2012 mean that older, incandescent bulbs will be phased out. Consumers, however, will still have a choice between newer, more efficient incandescent bulbs, CFLs and LED bulbs, reports the NRDC.

Congressional Republicans included a rider in a spending bill last week that will delay enforcement of the light bulb efficiency law that was signed by President Bush in 2007. The Associated Press reports Rep. Fred Upton (R-Michigan) said, "Americans don't want government standards determining how they light their homes."

According to the NRDC, the change is hardly a coup. The Republican rider "pertains only to funding for federal enforcement of federal lighting standards for this fiscal year." The delay will not affect standards for manufacturers, or ultimately, consumers. Rocky Kistner, a HuffPost blogger with the NRDC, said "the money-saving law" is "good for American consumers -- and for American workers and their companies."

Light bulb manufacturers even oppose Congress' efficiency standards funding delay. A statement from the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, representing over 90 percent of the lighting industry, said the industry "remains committed and supportive of the lighting standards established [by the 2007 law]."

Buy the bulb that gives off the amount of light you need (lumens), not the amount of energy you're used to wasting (watts). For example, a typical 60W light bulb produces around 800 lumens. But CFLs that produce 800 lumens only use 15W. To help consumers during this transition, bulb packages will likely contain a claim like "as bright as a 60W bulb" or "15W = 60W" to indicate the bulb is a suitable replacement for your old 60W incandescent bulb.

Nokia CEO says to keep headquarters in Finland: TV (Reuters)

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? Stephen Elop, the first non-Finn to run Nokia, on Sunday quashed rumors the cellphone maker could move its headquarters to the United States from Espoo, a suburb of the Finnish capital Helsinki.

"As long as I am the CEO the headquarters is in Espoo," Elop told national broadcaster YLE. "That's our home, our sense of belonging."

Canadian Elop was enticed in September 2010 from his post as president of Microsoft's Business Division to lead Nokia and halt its decline.

The company has since cut thousands of jobs in its homeland, raising fears it could also move its headquarters.

James M. Lynch: FAMU Hazing; The Buck Speeds Past

James Ammons, FAMU president, surprised by a CNN reporter, responding to questions about the 'alleged hazing death' of FAMU student Robert Champion pretty much 'failed the test' of leadership when interviewed. If you were watching the report, aired several times today, and left the facts of this and other pending FAMU scandals aside, you'd still see this breakdown as one in which the buck not only didn't stop with Ammons, it barely slowed down.

According to the reporter, Jason Carroll of CNN, President James Ammons is where the 'buck stops, so to speak''. Ambushing Ammons as he got out of his car, Carroll confronted him on the death of the marching band student, an apparent hazing incident gone horrifically wrong. Ammons tried desperately to stick to the apparently approved script but the opportunity to really stand out, to be a leader for his university, to really teach something about value to his students and the opportunity to possibly to save lives in the future, he failed to grasp.

Ammons's spoke of how "our number one priority is the health, safety and well being of his students", but when Carroll asked, 'Do you bare, personally, any responsibility?', Ammons spun away from really showing care for the university's students' well being. Instead he blew smoke and the buck passed by.

Citing appropriate 'policies and procedures' he deflected the death of this young man to the university system as a whole: "This is a culture, not just here at FAMU, it's on colleges and universities all across America".

When pressed directly with Carroll's question about responsibility, Ammons' ducked again: "I've done everything in accordance to the law here in the state of Florida". For that moment alone, Ammons deserves to be shown the door by the University board before any other youngsters die.

One of the key principals of my coaching work with individuals and businesses is to take 100% responsibility for any and all circumstances; that's where leadership resides. I offer this lesson now to Ammons.

The correct response for a leader, especially one entrusted with the lives of thousands of students, most away from home for the first time in their lives, the answer Ammons should have said was: 'NO. Based on results, whatever I've done is not enough. Based on the results, whatever the laws here in the state of Florida, whatever other universities have done across the country, if ONE student is hurt in this way then we, I mean 'I', have not done enough and from this time forward I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure this never happens again. And I will commit that I will take my case to other colleges and universities across the country until we never, ever have another death of this type in our system'.

It seems at Penn State and Florida that someone is more interested in talking about the situations and avoiding blame rather than taking the higher ground and, considering these are institutions of learning, the lessons are being lost rather easily. And the buck keep speeding past.

Sprint: 26 million devices with Carrier IQ, but we only ping a fraction at one time

Sprint

Sprint, in its reponse to U.S. Sen. Al Franken over its use of the Carrier IQ software, goes into great detail about how and why it needs and uses such analytic data, reiterating that "The Carrier IQ diagnostic tool can help Sprint engineers understand the functionality (or not) of handset appliations when connecting with the network and steps that Sprint might take to improve services ..."

Sprint also told Franken that it has Carrier IQ installed on some 26 million devices, but that the Carrier IQ software doesn't actually collect any data until Sprint itself tells it to. In fact, says Sprint, only 1.3 million devices -- that's 5 percent of the 26 million total -- may be "tasked" to collect data at a given time. And, Sprint says, that number often is much lower -- 30,000 -- when responding to specific research requests.

Sprint didn't spell out exactly which of its devices use Carrier IQ -- which has been in service of the carrier since 2006 -- but we've already seen answers from HTC and Samsung. (Motorola's are forthcoming.) The phones listed thus far include:

  • Samsung: Moment, Epic 4G, Intercept, Transform, Galaxy Tab (original 7-inch), Galaxy Prevail, Replenish, Conquer 4G, Transform Ultra (Boost Mobile), Epic 4G Touch
  • Sprint: Snap (Windows Mobile), Touch Pro 2 (Windows Mobile), Hero, EVO 4G, EVO Shift 4G, EVO 3D, EVO Design 4G

Sprint also told Franken that it does not share any of the data it receives with third parties, that it "is used internally for Sprint's own use, for analysis by Sprint employees and contractors to assist wtih device certification and functionality on its own network, for network maintenance and improvement." But, Sprint added, "In the course of certifying device funcationality, prior to selling phones to customers, Sprint does share and receive certain testing results with handset manufacturers." The emphasis there is ours. Anything it shares with the manufacturer comes before it's in your pocket. Sprint also indicated that it does nto share any Carrier IQ data with law enforcement.

Sprint also explained how long Carrier IQ data is stored. Carrier IQ itself stores some of the data on its services for "approximately 30-45 days." Sprint keeps some data on its own servers for 6 months or so, and stores aggregated reports from Carrier IQ for 12 months (varies depending on the analysis being conducted, Sprint says).

Probably our favorite part of Sprint's repsonse, though, comes from a footnote in its introductary statement, wherein Sprint reminds us all that it already knows the cell site you're using, the people your calling and texting, and the websites you're visiting. It has to to be a carrier, and you're paying it to do so. Here's the full passage:

"Similarly, we know the cell site on which a phone is registering its location, which is necessary for the delivery of voice and data services. We also know the telephone numbers to which our customers initiated a call or sent a text. Such data is necessary to deliver communications services. In many cases the data collection is required by law and regulations."

Grand Theft Auto III out now for iOS and Android (Digital Trends)

Grand Theft Auto III MobileIn celebration of its tenth anniversary, Rockstar Games has released Grand Theft Auto III for the iPhone, the iPad and various Android devices. The original game transformed the Grand Theft Auto franchise when it was launched in 2001, introducing a third-person viewpoint and a large, open-world map.

It also became dogged by controversy, concentrated mainly on the level of violence, its treatment of women and supposed glorification of criminal activities. The game was even banned for a while in Australia.

Set in Liberty City, you play Claude, a man working his way up through the criminal ranks so he can take revenge on a former girlfriend, after being double-crossed by her during a bank robbery. The game has been faithfully converted, so you can expected an almost identical gaming experience to the one you had ten years ago.

There are some changes however, as the control system has been reworked for the touchscreen, and the graphics have been given an HD overhaul to make best use of the iPhone and iPad???s abilities. This is most obvious when looking at the cars and roadside signs.

The same game has been released for certain Android devices too, and we got a sneak peak of it running on a Tegra 2-powered tablet back in October. Compatible devices include the HTC Rezound, the Motorola Droid X2 and Atrix 4G, plus the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. The list initially included the Samsung Galaxy S II, but the popular device was subsequently removed due to unspecified technical issues.

Released worldwide today, GTA III is available inside the through the iTunes App Store, where it?s a universal app for the iPhone and iPad, and has been priced at $4.99 in the USA and ?2.99 in the UK,
