New breast cancer screening law bittersweet news for husband of ...

REPORTER FILE PHOTO | Breast cancer screening legislation passed in Albany was lobbied for by the late Teresa Montant of Shelter Island.

It?s a bittersweet reality for Shelter Islander Townsend Montant that the New York State Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo have finally taken steps to improve breast cancer detection by requiring that patients with dense breast tissue be informed that they may be candidates for further testing.

Less than a year ago, Mr. Montant?s wife, Teresa, lost her battle with metastatic triple negative breast cancer ? a battle she might well have won had the new law gone into effect a few years earlier. The legislation was signed by Governor Cuomo on June 23.

What the law will require when it takes effect in six months is that patients whose mammograms show dense breast tissue be informed that they should speak with their doctors about whether further screening is appropriate. Dense breast tissue can hide early detection of cancer cells that may be life threatening by the time they show up on a mammogram. Such was the case with Teresa Montant.

She dutifully got annual mammograms, her husband said. But by the time a mammogram showed breast tumors in 2009, the disease had progressed.

While battling the disease, Ms. Montant became an activist working for exactly the kind of legislation that might have saved her life. And when she lost her life last October, her husband carried on the campaign, working with other activists throughout the area, not just lobbying for legislation, but doing his part to inform women he encounters about the possibility that they may need more than a simple mammogram each year.

Apple Reveals 2005 ?Purple? iPhone Prototype To Show It Didn?t Copy Sony

The patent war between Apple and Samsung is just starting to heat up, with both tech giants scheduled to appear in U.S. court today. Apple accused Samsung of copying the iPhone and iPad back in April 2011, and Samsung countersued with similar accusations. In the months leading up to the trial, there have been treasure troves of previously hidden information uncovered, including hundreds of early iPhone and iPad prototype designs.

One design in particular, aptly named ?Jony,? sparked an accusation from Samsung saying that Apple borrowed from Sony?s designs to create the first iPhone. To combat Samsung?s claim, Apple has since produced an early (and possibly first) prototype design of the iPhone from circa 2005.

?Purple? predates the Jony design Samsung wants to use as evidence against Apple in court, reports The Verge. Samsung?s accusation centered around Apple designer?Shin Nishibori and the Jony prototype he designed under Ive?s guidance.?Nishibori was said to have been inspired heavily by Sony?s design principles, and Samsung wanted to use the Jony prototype as evidence that Apple copied another tech company while creating the original iPhone. Fueling the courtroom drama,?Nishibori has refused to appear in court to testify, citing that he no longer works at Apple.

Apple Reveals 2005 ?Purple? iPhone Prototype To Show It Didn?t Copy Sony

According to Apple?s lawyers working on the Samsung case, the Jony prototype was just??an ?enjoyable? side project? that didn?t influence the final design of the original iPhone. Essentially, Purple came first and was the basis of the first iPhone, while Jony was just an experimental deviation during Apple?s development process. As you can see, Purple also looks a lot like the iPhone 4.

The judge in the Apple vs. Samsung trial has forbidden Samsung of using the Jony prototype as evidence against Apple in light of this new evidence.

Apple is a company that constantly prototypes different product designs. It?s not surprising that at least a few concepts borrow from the competition. Fortunately for Apple, the finished products are what counts.

Why passion always leads to success - Self Improvement Tips

Why passion leads to being successful

Ever wondered how people such as Steve jobs or Michael Dell managed to create large well known multinationals out of nothing? Why did those two college drop outs succeeded in creating companies that are worth billions even though they had almost nothing to start with ? Is there some kind of a secret that can enable a person to succeed in life even if he had limited resources?

Yes of course there is a secret, and this secret is called passion.

How Success Happens

Before I tell you about the connection between passion and success, I have to tell you more about the way success happens. Ask any successful person in the world about his success story and you will find that the story goes as follows:

  1. He had a big dream and believed in it
  2. He started perusing his dream
  3. Most people started putting him down
  4. He faced devastating setbacks
  5. ?He rose up and fulfilled his dream.

For 99% of the successful people you talk to, the scenario will almost always be the same. They all share common attributes that are alike amongst others who have succeeded.

Now, ever asked yourself what fueled these people to become motivated; to move past those that were against them?

That fuel is passion!

Why Passion Always Leads to Success

This is why passion leads to success:

  1. It will motivate you to keep trying

We all know that success rarely happen from the first attempt, and that?s why you need a certain kind of motivation to keep you going?even when you fail.

People who are passionate about their dreams keep trying until they find out what works. Those who lack passion on the other hand do not find enough reasons to keep going after they fall. They simply do not have the extra fuel to keep going.

  1. It will motivate you to learn

What motivates a person to spend a full day reading about a certain topic? Again it is passion.

Success cannot happen without knowledge. In fact, the only reason people are able to succeed after a few tries is because they learn new things with each attempt, and they put that new knowledge into effect.

Doing without knowledge is dangerous. Knowledge without doing is laziness. Combine both and you will become successful.

After some time, people find that they have enough knowledge to make their dreams come true. Without passion you won?t find a reason to learn and you won?t be motivated to read. Passion makes you want to become better, to do more than what you?re capable of.

Follow Your Passion

Many people follow the herd without ever allowing themselves to go after their passions. Usually the fear of being different and the lack of courage to do what people normally won?t do holds these people back. This is why there are more unsuccessful people. ?Successful people are not afraid to leave new footprints behind. They believe in what they?re doing, and where it?ll lead them.

If you want to become successful in life, then find out the thing that you are passionate about. When you discover it, go towards it without anyone telling you that it can?t be done. Let your own passion fuel you. You cannot let others stop you if your passion for something outweighs the fear of being criticize.

Just follow your passion because that is what always leads to success.

Nigeria's floating slum targeted by authorities

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ?

The Makoko slum floats on the murky lagoon that separates mainland Nigeria from the island that gave birth to its largest city, a permanent haze of smoke rising from homes built on timber stilts.

For some, Makoko provides an escape from the overcrowded neighborhoods of Lagos, a city of millions where families crowd into one-room apartments or sleep soundly in unfinished buildings. Others view the slum as an eyesore where the 100,000 residents dump trash, excrement and everything else into the brackish waters.

A government-led eviction last week that saw men in speedboats destroy homes with machetes there left about 3,000 people homeless and raised new fears among activists that authorities may try to wipe the community out entirely. While the government has pulled back from its demolishing effort, its own notice suggests it wants the entire community gone.

"We are just trying to survive," said Mirabelle Agbete as she drifted away in her canoe with her son. "This is unfair, we are human beings. How do you just throw out people without warning?"

Makoko is a sprawling community of bamboo homes and shacks built out of driftwood, close to the University of Lagos campus and visible to daily traffic that plies the Third Mainland Bridge, the link from the mainland to the city's islands. Those living in Makoko subsist largely as fishermen and workers in nearby saw mills, cutting up water-logged timber that's floated into the city daily. Some work jobs outside of the slum as gate guards and in other industries, though most live almost entirely within its watery boundaries.

The people of Makoko have created their own life independent from the state, with its own schools and clinics, however ill-equipped. Commerce goes on in its creek alleyways as women sell sizzling dishes and goods from canoes. Others sell videos and telephone airtime cards from the shacks just above the waterline, where a maze of wooden planks connects the homes.

Children who attend classes in schools on the water learn in English and French and speak various languages from Nigeria and neighboring Benin. Many residents in Makoko come from the French-speaking West African nation but have lived in the community for decades.

Waterfront villages remain common through Nigeria and Lagos itself grew out of one. However, Makoko's uniqueness and visibility has turned it into a poster child for urban poverty. It has featured in photo exhibits and documentaries around the world, something politicians and others have criticized for giving what they describe as a warped view of Lagos.

Authorities have gone in and evicted homeowners before from the area. However, this time, Lagos state government gave Makoko residents only three days to demolish their own homes and evacuate before they came in. Activists said one official told them the state wanted to remove homes near a power line because it was not safe for people to live there. But the government notice made no mention of the power line and ordered the evacuation of the entire waterway.

"The Lagos state government is desirous of restoring the amenity and value of the waterfront ... (and) improve the waterfront/coastline to underline the megacity status of the state," the government notice read.

If totally removed, the demolition of Makoko could leave at least 100,000 people homeless, said Felix Morka, the executive director of Social and Economics Rights Action Center, which works with Makoko residents. After a march by Makoko residents Monday, Lagos state Gov. Babatunde Raji Fashola asked them to return home, though some have nowhere to go. Since the demolitions started last week, many have slept in their canoes tucked in between their belongings. Some took shelter under the Third Mainland Bridge, while others moved out or found a place to squat.

"Many people are sleeping in my school," said Noah Shemede, the head teacher at Whanyinna Primary School. "We'll manage. In my house, I can take a few more people, the most important thing is that we stay together."

The authorities' reluctance to clarify what they intend for Makoko has sparked apprehension for the slum's remaining residents. Akin Ogunlana, the head operations of Kick Against Indiscipline, who was supervising the demolitions in Makoko, told The Associated Press he simply followed orders given to him by the state government. Adesegun Oniru, Lagos state's waterfront infrastructure and development commissioner, declined to comment.

The continued unease has already sparked violence. On Saturday, trouble started when authorities tried to demolish a building after officials reached an informal agreement about how they would target homes for destruction. A police officer shot dead community chief Timothy Hunpoyanwha, residents have said. The traditional ruler had only been trying to mediate between the authorities and angry youths, said Ewajane Osowo, the secretary of Ilaje CrayFish Fishermen Association.

Lagos state spokeswoman Ngozi Braide said a police corporal had been arrested over the fatal shooting, which remains under investigation.

The killing prompted Fashola to order a stop to the demolition exercise. He also said he was willing to speak with the communities to reach a compromise, but said Makoko would not be allowed to grow any further.

The lagoon "is the natural drainage that God has given us and we have to preserve it," the governor said at the time. "The only issue was the expansion of the community and the time to define the boundary is now."

Forced evictions recently have happened in unplanned neighborhoods around Abuja, Nigeria's capital, as well as in Port Harcourt, the largest city in the country's oil-rich Niger Delta. In Port Harcourt, authorities destroyed the Abonnema Wharf community which, by some estimates, was home to about 25,000 families. Amnesty International criticized that demolition, saying evictions should "be carried out only as a last resort."

But many in Nigeria, a country beset by government corruption and mismanagement, take a fatalistic view of their chances. Lawsuits over real estate languish for years in the country's overworked courts system. And those evicted often don't have the money to launch a legal challenge, instead focusing on the day-to-day struggle most face in feeding their families in a nation where most earn less than $2 a day.

"What can I do? It has happened, it has happened," said Abraham Mesou, a traditional ruler in the area who had to destroy a home he had lived in for more than 22 years. "We are fishermen but I don't pray for my children to be fishermen so they don't suffer the way we have suffered."

Home Buying Tips From Real Estate Experts | Realty Services Plus

It can be quite daunting to buy real estate, particularly for first time buyers. It should calm your nerves somewhat to realize just how lucrative wisely planned and executed real estate investments can be. This article has some information to help you get started buying real estate whether you are a first-time buyer, or a veteran.

When you are negotiating the price of real estate, it is best to have a moderate approach. It can be counter productive to be too aggressive in your bargain hunting. It?s best to tell your real estate agent what you want, and let them handle the negotiations themselves. They have experience.

Real estate agents should contact those who they have helped buy or sell a home once each year. If you call them again, they will know how much help you were when they were buying their home. Kindly remind them that you make your income via referrals and that you would feel honored if they spread your name to friends.

You?ve finally decided to buy a house, but now you have to find a reputable real estate agent. You?ll want to find an agent you can trust. For an area you?re unfamiliar with, check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints against agents and how they were resolved. Look around until you find an agent that truly seems to be looking out for your best interests.

Before you buy a house, hire a home inspector. If the house you?re looking at requires serious renovation work, you need to know it before buying it. This makes the inspector an extremely cost-effective and-safety conscious choice that should never be bypassed.

Do some research and analysis on the area housing market. Use various websites to check for foreclosed homes, sales prices and time on market for houses in your local area. Other things you may want to investigate are local unemployment rates, income levels and schools. In some cases, having the perfect location can override other factors.

Build a large network of fellow real estate investors. There will be a steady supply of properties that are available, but each investor will have a preference for particular types of property. This can lead you to the perfect place that you might not have found otherwise.

When purchasing a home, try to limit the existence of fireplaces to one, to avoid having to maintain too many of them. Multiple fireplaces don?t get used as a general rule, and they are a nuisance to keep clean.

Buying and investing in real estate is a huge purchasing decision that will have a dramatic impact on your life. The advice in this piece can help you steer clear of common real estate traps, and make the best decision

British P.M. Reveals Government's Commitment to Equal Marriage ...

Towards the end of yesterday?s reception at Downing Street hosted by the prime minister, Mr Cameron addressed the LGBT community members in a brief speech, during which he said: ?I run an institution ? the Conservative Party ? which for many, many years got itself on the wrong side of this argument, it locked people out who were naturally Conservative from supporting it and so I think I can make that point to the Church, gently.?

I sensed that Mr Cameron carries a steely determination to achieve success in his equal marriage campaign, against the resistance of both old-school members of his party and the conservative elements in mainstream Churches.

Members of the group Out4Marriage said Mr Cameron had given the strong impression that he personally supports giving churches and other religious institutions the right to hold gay wedding ceremonies if they chose to do so in England and Wales. Although he was adamant that churches should be protected from being compelled to conduct gay wedding ceremonies, he also said that a debate on the issue still needed to take place as he recognised different opinions within the Church, with some vicars happy to celebrate gay weddings.

Joseph Musgrave of Out4Marriage, who I met at the reception, told PinkNews.co.uk: ?The debate within religious organisations over solemnising same-sex marriages is fast taking centre stage and we are encouraged by the Prime Ministers? comments yesterday.?

The House of Bishops and staff at Church House are very slowly beginning to understand that they may no longer have any control over the outcome of the CPs in church/equal marriage debate. For over three decades, conservative (evangelical) voices in England and across the Anglican Communion have been dominant.

Conservative evangelicals may still imagine that theirs is the authoritative, orthodox, traditional Christian voice. They may think the country will listen to their moral and ethical arguments but they are wrong. The majority of UK citizens and of MPs no longer agree with them or respect them.

Today?s Guardian carries an article about morality and ethics by Julian Baggini. He says ?the decline of morality in the latter part of the 2oth century paralleled the decline of respect for the authority of the church, as we stopped looking up to clerics as moral authorities. The idea that [morality] is a set of rules prescribed by an authority, usually religious, has been understandably rejected.?

The Church of England is still engaging with homosexuality on terms set by conservatives, justifying evolutionary change against a reading of the Bible which justifies discriminating against LGB&T people. I suspect many members of General Synod are still processing the moral and ethical implications of the ?clobber texts? as articulated by Reform and Anglican Mainstream.

The majority of UK citizens have come to the conclusion that same-sex love and marriage is ethically and morally equal to heterosexual marriage. Supporters of Changing Attitude, LGCM, Inclusive Church, various bishops and staff members at Church House and many members of Synod are similarly convinced of the intrinsically moral quality of LGB&T relationships lived in accordance with Christian ethical values.

The Church of England is going to face considerable challenges over the next two years confronted with a government determined to enact equal marriage. For too long, the debate has been controlled by people whose own ethical values appear barely Christian at times, using abuse, manipulative tactics and distorting the truth of LGB&T Christian lives and ministries.

The future looks grim for the Church of England if it fails to confront and overcome such prejudiced, unloving attitudes.

Thanks to ?Changing Attitude? for this description of the U.K. Prime Minister, David Cameron?s, assurance that he stands for the equality of LGBT couples with heterosexual couples when it comes to the legalisation of their relationships in Marriage. Despite fears to the contrary, however, the Prime Minister does not intend to force religious bodies to solemnise Same-Sex Marriages; he leaves that to their own discretion and conscience. However, he asks the Churches to consider where they really stand on this issue of fundamental justice for all. Now that the Scottish Parliament has pledged to bring in legislation that will allow Same-Sex Marriage, it seems that parts of the British Isles will join many European countries in the liberalisation of legal Marriage to include the celebration of their monogamous relationships by committed LGBT couples. Far from discouraging heterosexual Marriage, this bodes well towards encouraging heterosexual couples not to be left behind in the public celebration of their own commitment to ?loving monogamous relationship.

The New Zealand Government is presently discussing whether to allow Same-Sex Couples to marry.

Baby robot Affetto gets a torso, still gives us the creeps

It's taken a year to get the sinister ticks and motions of Osaka University's Affetto baby head out of our nightmares -- and now it's grown a torso. Walking that still-precarious line between robots and humans, the animated robot baby now has a pair of arms to call its own. The prototype upper body has a babyish looseness to it -- accidentally hitting itself in the face during the demo video -- with around 20 pneumatic actuators providing the movement. The face remains curiously paused, although we'd assume that the body prototype hasn't been paired with facial motions just yet, which just about puts it the right side of adorable. However, the demonstration does include some sinister faceless dance motions. It's right after the break -- you've been warned.

From Black Hat: Hackers Demonstrate N.F.C. Dangers - NYTimes.com

Hackers can steal photos, text messages, surf the Web and even make phone calls from your smartphone simply with the wave of a hand, researchers at the annual Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas said Wednesday.

Charlie Miller, a security researcher at Accuvant and serial smartphone hacker, demonstrated how easy it is for hackers to exploit near-field communication technology to take control of devices remotely. In front of a packed audience, he successfully hacked three smartphones using N.F.C.: a Samsung Nexus S, a Galaxy Nexus and a Nokia N9. In each case, he was able to access photos, send texts, browse the Internet and even make phone calls from the phones, without laying a finger on them.

Near-field communication technology makes it possible for two devices to speak to each other when they are in proximity. It can be used to, say, swap business cards virtually, play music on wireless speakers or pay for coffee with a smartphone. The technology is widely available internationally and is slowly being adopted in the United States.

The mobile payments industry is banking on it. Google?s mobile payments app, Google Wallet, lets users pay for items and redeem offers by tapping their phones to an N.F.C.-enabled terminal. New York taxicabs were early adopters of the technology. So were Samsung and Nokia. Smartphones that run Google?s Android and Nokia?s MeeGo operating systems are now N.F.C.-enabled and rumor has it that Windows and Apple smartphones will be next. N.F.C. was the hot buzzword at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year and analysts predict that some 70 million smartphones sold this year will include the technology.

Near-field communications is supposed to make our lives easier. But security researchers warn it will make hackers? lives easier too.
Mr. Miller showed that by bringing an N.F.C. tag, equipped with a chip, in proximity with an Android Nexus S phone he could send the phone?s browser to a malicious Web site and, from there, access the phone?s entire file directory and even install monitoring software.

Google patched the bug Mr. Miller used in the 4.01 version of Android. But even with the fix, he showed how a relatively new Google feature, called Android Beam, in its Ice Cream Sandwich operating system allows for the same exploit. The feature, which lets users share contacts and directions by bringing two devices in proximity, also makes it possible for hackers to take control of their Web browser and download malicious software from there.

Hacking the Nokia N9 phone using near-field communication technology, Mr. Miller demonstrated, is a piece of cake. The Nokia N9?s N.F.C. feature is not enabled by default. But once a user enables it, the phone starts accepting all connection requests, including from hackers. In his demonstration, Mr. Miller showed how he could exploit that feature to make phone calls, read texts and access photos.

Russia: Syria says chemical arsenal safeguarded: agency

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow has received "firm assurances" from Damascus that its Syrian chemical arsenal is "fully safeguarded", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told the state-owned Itar-Tass news agency.

"We have received firm assurances from Damascus that the security of this arsenal is fully safeguarded," Gatilov told the agency in an interview published on Wednesday.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi acknowledged on Monday that the country had chemical weapons, and Western countries and Israel have expressed fears chemical weapons could fall into the hands of militant groups as Assad's authority erodes.

"Indian Cement Industry Outlook: Business Opportunities and Future ...

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/25/2012 -- India is ranked as the second-largest producer of cement in the world, only behind China. The Indian cement industry increased in value at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.14% during the review period (2007-2011), and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10.64% over the forecast period (2012-2016). This growth is primarily attributed to the government's high level of infrastructure spending, and the country's increasing number of residential and commercial construction activities. The Indian government invested US$500 billion on infrastructure during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (2007-2012) and revealed plans to invest a further US$1 trillion on infrastructure during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2012-2017). The large-scale investment on various infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, bridges and ports, will generate a huge demand for cement over the forecast period. Shorter deadlines for builders to complete projects, labor shortages, space constraints in large cities, the growing need for mechanization and the backlog of infrastructure projects are the main factors driving the increased use of ready-mixed concrete (RMC) in India. Large township projects in the suburbs of India's leading cities where IT zones are prominent are also generating more demand for RMC. Upcoming infrastructure projects, including energy, roads, ports and airport projects, across India will continue to drive the growth of RMC in India over the forecast period.

Amazon limits 3G use on Kindles to 50 megabytes a month

Shouldn't be a problem for casual readers

Amazon has placed a cap on 3G broadband use for its Kindle e-readers, ending its previously unlimited free browsing. Browser use is now restricted to 50 megabytes per month for the devices. The cap will not include use of the e-readers on wifi networks and you can still download as many ebooks as you want from Amazon.

This may not have a major impact on most Kindle owners since the electronic ink screen makes for a less than ideal browsing experience. But for those who do use the Kindle for most of their online experience, 50MB is barely enough to get by.?GigaOM suggested that the limit on broadband may be an effort to block people from hacking the devices to use them as free mobile hotspots. The decision may also be an effort to reduce Amazon's costs for 3G use or to encourage more people to upgrade to the Kindle Fire.

Veloce Publishing - Automotive stuff: ENTER CLASSIC CAR OF ...

Classic Car of the Year 2011
font>
The most diverse range of classic cars spanning sixty years of motoring heritage have entered the competition to be crowned the UK?s Classic Car of the Year 2012 ? but there?s still time to get your pride and joy in the race as the deadline for entries is 3rd August 2012. The winner will receive a fantastic first prize valued at over ?3,500 with over ?700 worth of runners up prizes up for grabs.

The nationwide competition, organised by Classic Car Weekly, Classic Cars and Practical Classics magazines in association with Lancaster Insurance, is open to any car made before 1990. It?s not about how much money has been spent or how many miles the car has done, it?s the story behind the car that could make it a winner.

Entrants range from the old school elegance of a 1933 Standard Swallow two-door coupe to the more modern power of a 1987 Ford RS500 Sierra Cosworth, so every motoring taste is covered. Some of the cars have been passed from generation to generation such as the 1955 Daimler Conquest Century Saloon, while others were purchased because of their history like the 1976 Alfa Romeo Guilia Nuova Super.

There are cars that have consumed their owner?s time and money as they have been taken apart and lovingly restored back to their former glory like the 1982 Morris Ital. Others like the 1958 Triumph TR3a have travelled the world, fundraising for worthwhile charities in remembrance for absent friends.

An expert judging panel will evaluate the entrants on their individual merits as well as awarding extra points for going to extraordinary lengths to rebuild a car, its fascinating history and incredible journeys undertaken. They will also be looking for cars that are part of the family, those used everyday and those that have been obtained after a lengthy search or quest.

From this information and imagery provided, the panel will then shortlist 20 cars from each category and invite the public to vote for their favourite. It will be the public who decide the winner and the runners up of each category. The winning cars will then go on display at the Classic Motor Show at Birmingham?s NEC from 16th to 18th November where the overall winner with the most votes will be revealed and the grand prize awarded.

Classic car owners can enter via the competition website www.ccoty.co.uk or by sending details of the car, a brief history, full contact details and up to three images to Classic Car of the Year, Media House, Lynchwood, Peterborough, PE2 6EA.

Flood Zone Mapping Impacts Real Estate Transactions More Than ...

We have all seen it: homes devastated by floods, filled with mud and debris ? or worse yet, homes floating down a swollen river. Have you sometimes wondered why anyone would want to live in an area that is always prone to flooding? Ironically, the answer to that question remains an unsolved mystery. Equally mysterious is the fact that you could reside in a flood plain and not even know it, if not for flood zone certification, a process that is overseen by the federal government through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Part of the oversight provided by the NFIP is the creation of flood maps based on flood zones (low, medium and high-risk flood areas) determined by FEMA.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of flood zone mapping from our perspective is the occasional ? and yet predictable ? delays in funding reauthorization from the federal government for its own program. Many of us are not routinely aware of what occurs in Washington, D.C. and how it affects us. You may not consider a simple or minor action (or inaction) on Capitol Hill as one having an immediate major impact on real estate or any other industry, but it happens frequently. This is what?s known as the butterfly effect: a seemingly insignificant or small occurrence that transforms into greater consequences for different purposes or outcomes.

If you don?t think this mapping process impacts you or your neighbor across the street, think again. If the flood zone map shows that you are living in a 100-year flood plain, you will be required to purchase flood insurance in order to purchase or refinance a home, and flood insurance is very expensive. However hard it may be to believe, the maintenance of a national registry of flood zone maps can directly or indirectly impact your ability to refinance or purchase property.

Maintaining updated flood zone mapping is crucial. A number of years ago, NFIP?s funding for this process was not renewed. The butterfly effect of this inaction was an expensive flood insurance liability for an older industrial area near downtown Columbus, Ohio. Without funding, the flood zone maps were not updated, which meant that no property development could be insured. Substantial economic activity in that area was shut down for four years. And because the maps had not been maintained, once the flood wall was finally constructed, the insurance companies? hands were tied. They had to require flood insurance, an expensive overhead cost that could have been initially avoided but for congressional failure to act.

In Closing ?

This butterfly effect was recently averted, albeit very close to a May 31 deadline, when the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill, H.R. 5740, extending NFIP provisions for 60 days. Had the interim extension not occurred, funding for flood zone mapping would have halted, and an estimated 12,000 real estate transactions per day across America would have been put on hold, pending the program?s renewal by Congress. But 60 days is going to come and go very quickly, and we?ll be right back in the same boat.

Attacks across Iraq kill 107, injure hundreds

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - At least 107 people were killed in bomb and gun attacks in Iraq on Monday, a day after 20 died in explosions, in a coordinated surge of violence against mostly Shi'ite Muslim targets.

The bloodshed, which coincided with an intensifying of the conflict in neighboring Syria, pointed up the deficiencies of the Iraqi security forces, which failed to prevent insurgents from striking in multiple locations across the country.

As well as the scores of deaths, at least 268 people were wounded by bombings and shootings in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad, the Shi'ite town of Taji to the north, the northern cities of Kirkuk and Mosul and many other places, hospital and police sources said, making it one of Iraq's bloodiest days in weeks.

No group has claimed responsibility for the wave of assaults but a senior Iraqi security official blamed the local wing of al Qaeda, made up of Sunni Muslim militants hostile to the Shi'ite-led government, which is friendly with Iran.

"Recent attacks are a clear message that al Qaeda in Iraq is determined to spark a bloody sectarian war," the official said, asking not to be named.

"With what's going on in Syria, these attacks should be taken seriously as a potential threat to our country. Al Qaeda is trying to push Iraq to the verge of Shi'ite-Sunni war," he said. "They want things to be as bad as in Syria."

Iraq, whose desert province of Anbar, a Sunni heartland, borders Syria, is nervous about the impact of the conflict in its neighbor where mainly Sunni rebels are fighting to end President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite-dominated rule.

The Iraqi government said on Monday it rejected Arab League calls for Assad to quit, saying it was for the Syrian people alone to decide his fate and others "should not interfere".

Arab League foreign ministers meeting in Doha earlier in the day offered Assad a "safe exit" if he stepped down swiftly.

Baghdad advocates reform in Syria, rather than endorsing calls by Sunni-ruled Gulf nations for Assad's removal.

The last two days of attacks in Iraq shattered a two-week lull in violence in the run-up to the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan, which Iraqis began observing on Saturday.

Sectarian slaughter peaked in 2006-2007 but deadly attacks have persisted while political tensions among Iraq's main Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish factions have increased since U.S. troops completed their withdrawal in December.

"I ask the government if security forces are capable of keeping control," a man named Ahmed Salim shouted angrily at the scene of a car bomb in Kirkuk. "With all these bloody bombs and innocent people killed, the government should reconsider its security plans," he told Reuters Television.

TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION

The security forces themselves were often the targets or victims of the assaults perpetrated across Iraq.

Gunmen using assault rifles and hand grenades killed at least 16 soldiers in an attack on an army post near Dhuluiya, 70 km (45 miles) north of Baghdad, police and army sources said.

In Taji, 20 km north of Baghdad, six explosions, including a car bombing, occurred near a housing complex. A seventh blast there caused carnage among police who had arrived at the scene of the earlier ones. In all, 32 people were killed, including 14 police, with 48 wounded, 10 of the police.

Two car bombs struck near a government building in Sadr City, a vast, poor Shi'ite swathe of Baghdad, and in the mainly Shi'ite area of Hussainiya on the outskirts of the capital, killing a total of 21 people and wounding 73, police said.

Nine people, including six soldiers, were killed in attacks in the northern city of Mosul, police and army sources said.

In Kirkuk, five car bombs killed six people and wounded 17, while explosions and gun attacks on security checkpoints around the restive province of Diyala killed six people, including four soldiers and policemen, and wounded 30, police sources said.

Other deadly attacks occurred in the towns of Khan Bani Saad, Udhaim, Tuz Khurmato, Samarra and Dujail, all north of Baghdad, as well as in the southern city of Diwaniya.

The orchestrated spate of violence followed car bombs on Sunday in two towns south of Baghdad and in the Shi'ite shrine city of Najaf that killed 20 people and wounded 80.

Last month was one of the bloodiest since the U.S. withdrawal, with at least 237 people killed and 603 wounded.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis took refuge in Syria from bloodshed that lasted for years after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. Last week the Iraqi government urged them to return home to escape the violence in Syria.

At least 80 buses laden with returning Iraqi refugees crossed the border last week, a U.N. spokeswoman said.

Iraq's Shi'ite-led government is also worried about the longer-term implications if Assad falls and Syria's majority Sunnis overthrow the supremacy of the president's Alawite sect, which traces its roots to Shi'ite Islam.

A sectarian struggle for control in post-Assad Syria could raise tensions across the border and damage Iraq's chances of overcoming its own formidable security and political challenges.

50_CF_60S-To date, there have only been a handful of watch projects on Kickstarter, and of those, there really have only been a couple that grabbed my attention. ?But here's an interesting one that just popped up on PleaseFund.us, a new crowd-funding site that looks to be a direct Kickstarter competitor. Terranaut Watch is bringing an oversized (50mm) watch to market, but one that they feel will "wear" signigicantly smaller, due to the lugs being hidden and the 13mm case.?I'm not the biggest fan of watches over 46mm - but if their design choices work out, this could be an interesting one to keep an eye one.

A recent analysis carried out by researchers from Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology finds that stress in women suffering from breast cancer can cause the cancer to spread to the bones.

The report of a study conducted by researchers from Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology and published in PLoS Biology journal states that stress and depression in women diagnosed with breast cancer can cause the disease to spread to the bones as it activates the sympathetic nervous system, which increases bone levels of a signaling molecule called RANKL.

RANKL is responsible for promoting the formation of osteoclasts which are bone cells that break down bone tissue.

?We came to the hypothesis that sympathetic activation might remodel the bone environment and make it more favorable for cancer cells to metastasis there,? said Florent Elefteriou, director of the Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology. ?Metastasis, the spread of cancer cells to distant organs, including bone is more likely to kill patients than a primary breast tumor,? Elefteriou said.

The test were carried out on mice where the researchers studied cancer cell metastasis in mice. Human breast cancer cells were injected into the mouse heart to model the stage of metastasis when breast cancer cells leave the primary site and move through the circulation. Findings suggested that treating the mice with a drug that mimics sympathetic nervous system activation caused more cancer lesions in bone.
