Egypt: Judges withdraw from trial of 16 Americans

(AP) ? All three judges on Tuesday pulled out of Egypt's trial of 43 pro-democracy workers, including 16 Americans, according to a court official, throwing into question the case that has ripped U.S.-Egypt relations.

The defendants are charged with using illegal foreign funds to foment unrest that has roiled Egypt over the past year. The pro-democracy groups and the U.S. flatly deny the charges, and U.S. officials have hinted that foreign aid to Egypt is in jeopardy.

Lead Judge Mohammed Shoukry said Tuesday that "the court felt uneasiness" in handling the case, according to the court official. He did not elaborate.

The official said new judges will be assigned to the case. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

The trial has proceeded only as far as its opening session, and it would need to be restarted with a new panel of judges. Coupled with indications that the two countries are trying to find an acceptable resolution to the crisis, it was seen possible that the trial might be called off at some point.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told two Senate panels on Tuesday that the United States and Egypt are "in very intensive discussions about finding a solution."

"We've had a lot of very tough conversations," she said. "We're moving toward a resolution."

"It's important that they know that we are continuing to push them," she said.

Egyptian lawyer and rights activist Ahmed Seif al-Islam said it was hard to interpret what was behind the resignations.

He said that judges pull out of cases over relationships with defendants or their lawyers. In other cases, especially the political ones, judges might feel pressure and prefer to stay away.

"In general, the main reason is that the judge feels that he cannot act as a real judge, and his rulings would be unfair or influenced," Seif al-Islam said.

The affair began in December when Egyptian security raided 17 offices of 10 pro-democracy and human rights groups, confiscating documents and equipment. It led to charges that the groups have financed protests over the past year with illegally obtained funds and have failed to register with the government as required.

The groups insist their financing is transparent, and all their efforts to register have been stalled by the Egyptian government.

The charges dovetail with constant pronouncements from Egypt's military rulers that protests against their rule are directed by unnamed, dark foreign forces, a claim that is ridiculed by Egyptian activists.

Furious over the charges and travel bans against civil society workers, the United States has threatened to cut off aid to Egypt, putting at risk $1.3 billion in military aid this year and another $250 million in economic assistance. Egyptian officials claim the matter is entirely in the hands of the judiciary, and many of them view the U.S. threat as unacceptable meddling.

The trial began Sunday, but the foreign defendants were not present. Shoukry declared a two-month adjournment to give lawyers time to read the case files, said to be in excess of 1,500 pages, and for authorities to find interpreters for non-Arabic speaking defendants.

Of the 43 defendants in the case, 16 are Americans, 16 are Egyptians, and others are German, Palestinian, Serb and Jordanian. Of the 16 Americans, seven have been banned from leaving Egypt, among them Sam LaHood, son of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Several have taken refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

The 43 worked for the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, Freedom House, a group that trains journalists and a German nonprofit organization. If convicted, they could face up to five years in prison.

Occupy Activists 'Mic Check' Pro-Israel College Event

Occupy Activists? ?Mic Check? Prompts Physical Altercation at Pro-Israel College Event

The Blaze
February 26, 2012

The efforts of pro-Palestinian ?Occupy? protesters to stifle the free speech of pro-Israel speakers nationwide continued at the University of New Mexico on Thursday night when a small group tried to shout down a speech by author Nonie Darwish. This time, their pre-planned disruption led to a physical altercation.

Darwish, founder of Arabs for Israel and director of Former Muslims United, was speaking at an event titled, ?Why the Arab Spring is Failing? organized by the University of New Mexico Israel Alliance and the David Horowitz Freedom Center.

Activists from ?(un)Occupy Albuquerque? ? a group allied with the Occupy Wall Street movement ? started a ?people?s mic? seen frequently during the Occupy Wall Street protests.

As seen on a video posted to YouTube (below), the pro-Palestinian activists yelled: ?Mic check! Nonie Darwish speaks for Israeli apartheid! And genocide at the hands of the IDF!?

Shortly after the ?mic check? begins, the audience is heard shouting at those disrupting the speech, and chanting ?U.S.A.! U.S.A.!? Then, a scuffle begins. Though the camera angle is tight ? which complicates providing an objective description ? it appears an older audience member tried to grab the paper (presumably the script of anti-Israel slogans) out of one of the Occupy protester?s hands, which lead to pushing and shoving.

This as other audience members further away shouted profanities, urging them to ?Get out!?

It?s unclear from the tape if an older male audience member lunged at the protesters or tripped on a chair and fell forward on then. Watch the two videos here posted by the protesters:

Arctic Engineering: We Learn to Build Like the Inuit Do

Cold seeps through the layers of my clothing as a few lonesome snowflakes skitter from an overcast sky. Everywhere I look there's nothing but ice and snow, a flat, monotonous landscape with the gentle slope of a low hill here and there. By arctic standards, it's a beautiful spring day.

I've come to northern Quebec to learn the art of igloo building at the Nunavik Arctic Survival Training Center, where Inuit instructors teach wilderness skills. The training center is a few miles from here in the village of Puvirnituq, a lonely outpost of 1450 souls on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay. Actually, to call it lonely is an understatement?as you arrive by air, it looks like a tiny island in a sea of white that stretches uninterrupted from horizon to horizon. At least these days it has heated buildings; 50 years ago, most of the community spent the winter in igloos.

Paulusi Novalinga, 56, was born in one. For years he accompanied his father, hunting and fishing in the traditional way and moving across the frozen landscape by dog team. Then times changed. The government built houses, a hospital, a school. Snowmobiles came, and TV, then the Internet. Kids grew up caring more about music than wilderness skills. Novalinga helped found the survival school 12 years ago as a way to reverse the trend. Today he enlists young men from the community to keep the old skills alive by teaching them to outsiders: army personnel, arctic pilots, the occasional tourist.

And now me. Judging by the burning sensation on my exposed skin, the temperature must be around 10 degrees Fahrenheit?it's hard to know precisely, because the Inuit don't seem to own any thermometers. Novalinga leads me a few yards to a sloping hillside. The ideal igloo-building material, he explains, is deep, solid snow that falls in the course of a single storm, so it doesn't have layers that could cause blocks to shear. It should also come from the windward slope of a hill, because the force of the wind packs the snow more densely.

Wielding his panak?a homemade machete with an angled handle?Novalinga digs in a few places to find the best spot, then cuts a rectangular hole about the size of a briefcase. Now we're ready to quarry snow blocks. Novalinga hands me the machete and talks me through the process. I make a long slice parallel to the existing cut, then lop off the bottom and sides at an angle. To get the block out, I insert the panak to its hilt in the middle of the long cut and punch downward to pop out the block. It has the texture of dense Styrofoam and weighs about 20 pounds.

Novalinga has me cut block after block until I've excavated a hole the size and shape of a shallow grave. With the machete, he inscribes a circle in the snow about 10 feet across, centered on the middle of the trench. I set my first block upright on his line, then chop the left edge along an imaginary line extended from the center point, haul up another block, cut its right edge to match, and slide them together. It's important, Novalinga says, to not only position the blocks right side up, but with the correct face inward. The Inuit believe that if you place the blocks backward, it will summon a storm.

We complete the first row, then spiral the blocks upward, angling them ever more steeply inward as they climb. The work progresses in a steady rhythm: Cut a block, lift it into place, trim the edge to match its neighbor, then trim the snow away from the middle of the bottom edge by jamming the panak into the joint and working it back and forth. This is the secret rule of igloo architecture: Each block must touch the row below only at its corners. (To understand why, I later consult with John Ochsendorf, a civil engineering and architecture professor at MIT. "What prevents the new block you've just added from falling out is a line of compressive force that passes through the block to the row beneath," he tells me. Each block acts as a mini arch, creating a line of compression between the top corner of the last block placed and the diagonally opposite corner of the block below.)

I do half the second row, then ask Novalinga to take over so I can snap some photos. In the time it has taken me to place three blocks, he lays down an entire row. I help by cutting more blocks from the floor, and from a section under one wall that will serve as the entrance. Soon he's working overhead, the chips of snow flying and settling onto his face and shoulders as he places the blocks into nearly horizontal positions. I keep expecting the fragile-looking structure to collapse, but the blocks stay glued in place by their own stickiness?adjacent blocks cement together because the snow is constantly melting and refreezing at a microscopic level.

At last Novalinga maneuvers the final block into place; it's irregularly shaped, like the last bite of a cookie. "That's an igloo!" he says. I look at my watch. We've finished the structure in 3 hours?an eternity for an Inuit igloo-builder. Novalinga has won speed-building competitions in 20 minutes.

Our work isn't quite done. We still have to go around the igloo's dome and stop up holes with carefully shaped plugs and loose chunks of snow, then form the debris inside into a low platform, so that the floor is slightly higher than the bottom of the door opening to keep the warm air from escaping. Inside, we poke holes for ventilation. With a pot of tea bubbling on the Coleman stove, candles burning, and caribou hides on the platform, it's easy to forget that we're encased in frozen water.
For the Inuit, the igloo is hearth and home, the center of their culture. But as a feature of daily life, it's fading from memory. When Novalinga eventually stops teaching igloo making, the skill will pass from the hands of those who knew it as a living art. "Young people are living in an imaginary world they see on the tube," Novalinga says. "They see the world down south and they can't have it, and they get confused. We're having a culture shock."

Outside, the daylight slowly fades to dark. The igloo glows like a Japanese lantern as the northern lights undulate overhead. Novalinga's nephew, Andrew, will spend the night here with me. I head back inside, and he cuts a block of snow to seal the entrance. (Traditionally, the Inuit built an entrance tunnel, like you see in a children's-book illustration, only when a storm was bearing down.) With my parka still on, I climb into my sleeping bag. It's the first time I've ever spent the night in a room with no door.

Andrew turns off the stove and climbs into his sleeping bag. The air cools quickly. My breath swirls out of my mouth like smoke. I pull the sleeping bag around my face and, as Andrew blows out the candles, fall into a deep sleep.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Sophisticated engineering underpins the design of the igloo. A cross section shows the snow shelter is a catenary arch that distributes the force of each row of snow blocks to the row below. This compressive force follows the curve of the wall to the base, creating a stable structure. According to a study in the December 1973 issue of Arctic, a sturdy igloo has a minimum height-to-diameter ratio of 3:10?that is, an igloo 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide (3:5 h/d ratio) is stable, but one 5 feet high and 25 feet wide (1:5) would be in danger of imminent collapse.

Marriage Counseling Orange County: Managing Change and Its ...

Change is stressful and difficult. Human beings are creatures of habit. When people want change they typically mean that they want others to adjust or they want a system or rule to be modified. People very seldom want to change themselves and even when they want it, they are often unwilling to do what it takes to bring about the transformation. This is no different in relationships. We typically want our spouses to change and of course we ourselves don't need any changes, right? Most couples who come see me when things go wrong, blame their spouses and want them to change. Most times they deny any problems of which they are accused. Today we are not going to talk about changing as people though; we are going to talk about external changes that impact our relationships.

His company wants to relocate him and she does not want to move to a different city. She wants to have children and he is not ready yet. She wants a bigger home or he wants a new car. Regardless of what the change is, we all face change, that is for certain. Change can happen to us without our consent; such as losing one's job, disability from an accident, and so forth. Change impacts our relationships whether we like it or not. Sometimes such alteration is good and sometimes it is disastrous. So how can we manage change to minimize any potential negative impact on our relationships?

1. When possible, honestly and deeply discuss the potential change with your spouse and find out how he or she feels about it.

2. If the change is optional, make the decision to change together; both spouses need to agree and take responsibility for the decision together. If things go wrong a joint decision eliminates any blame games.

3. If possible, take change slowly. Introduce the changes in steps, with time in between, to get used to the change.

4. Accept one change at a time, don't lump many changes together. Every change happening together builds on all the stress of each individual stress until it becomes overwhelming. Changing careers, moving, getting married, and having surgery all within a few months, for example, is not a good idea. If possible, stagger these changes over time.

5. Build on your strengths and accept changes in the areas which you feel confident in.

6. Make sure you are healthy and getting enough exercise before taking on any changes.

7. Be positive.

Taking Steps To Proper Skincare For The Beach | New Health and ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Exposure to sun at the beach causes wrinkles, blackheads, acne, scaly temples, broken blood vessels and lip sores. Contrary to the popular belief, tanning is not safe for skin and will likely cause skin burning and skin cancer too. Before you plunge into the beach to welcome these unwanted signs of old age, figure out what moisturizer and skincare routines are best for you.

Your skin is more likely to get sunburn in the midday heat. Use water resistant sunscreen lotion 20-30 minutes before going to the beach and reapply it after swimming. These sunscreens can remain active only for 90 minutes so repeat applications for the safer skin. Remember to apply it on dry skin and leave it for a bit to absorb the moisture.

Studies show that water acts like a lens and lets the sunlight penetrate deeper into the skin. Use heavier sunscreen if you are going in the water. Buy sunscreens that contain additional moisturizer such as Vitamin E and Aloe Vera. Apply sunscreen even when you are underneath the beach umbrella as the rays can reflect off the beach sand.

Use cocoa butter to re-moisturize the skin and to minimize peeling. It can also be used as an eye drop to get rid of sand particles from your eyes. To stop dried sun burnt lips apply medicated lip protection guard with SPF. Use water resistant eyeliners, mascaras and bronzers for that fabulous look in the water. Put on summer sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays. Wear hats with wide brims as it permits additional sun protection to your face and hair. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water.

Skin is the largest organ and the most sensitive part of your body. Special precautions and protection are required to enhance its beauty. Harmful ultraviolet rays can cause many skin diseases. In a recent survey it shows that these rays affect 10 million people every year. As the sun intensifies during the summer, it is more important than ever to prepare your skin, lips and hair to endure these dangerous sunrays, especially while you are on the beaches.

Is there something else you want to find out about skincare? If you want to learn more about skincare tips and how a moisturizer can help you, contact Likewise Skincare today!. This article, Taking Steps To Proper Skincare For The Beach is released under a creative commons attribution license.

Police to question boxers after brawl at news conference

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Police are to question British heavyweight boxers David Haye and Dereck Chisora after they brawled at a post-fight press conference in Germany late on Saturday, according to reports.

The incident occurred during a news conference after Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight belt, scoring a unanimous points decision over challenger Chisora in Munich's Olympic Hall.

NBC Sports: Kitschko defends title, then fight gets nasty

Haye, who had been working as a television pundit, became agitated by comments made by Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente, and began to heckle from the back of the conference.

That escalated until Chisora finally grabbed a microphone and stepped down from the main table into the media seating area to confront Haye.

Haye's manager Booth suffered a cut above his eye following the scuffle, thought to be caused by a camera tripod knocked over in the melee.

German police said they would interview both fighters on Sunday. A spokesman told the BBC: "The police have only just started an investigation in this this case. It is only at the very initial stages."

The whole incident took place in front of dozens of cameras, and can be seen in this uncensored YouTube clip, uploaded by sports website bokser.org, which contains audible bad language throughout.

"I'm totally disappointed, it went a little too far, the sport of boxing shouldn't be like that," Klitschko told the BBC after watching the fight.

The BBC also reported that Chisora allegedly threatened to shoot Haye follwing the incident. It said Chisora accused Haye of "glassing him", before saying at least four times that he would shoot Haye, adding: "If David don't fight me, I am going to physically burn him."

Reuters, NBC Sports and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Workshop light for lathe question - Family Woodworking

THE PICS ARE AT THE BOTTOM

OK I am going to try this again. I have not been able to get the correct pic with the correct text.

Hi,

I went out to the garage and took some pics. I hope I can get them where I want them this time.

Lowe?s $14 on sale (1)
Attachment 65100

Nice light, easy to maneuver, clip on base could be screwed to a panel instead of clipping. I just mounted an aluminum angle, cut a hole in it so one of the clamp feet would go through it. That hole keeps the lamp from moving on the aluminum because of vibration. If you made a wooden angle, it would be thicker and the hole might not be needed. Note my angle is mounted on about a 45 degree angle. Straight horizontal would probably not be a problem

Lowe?s $14 on sale (2)
Attachment 65101
Same as (1)

Harbor Freight $15
Attachment 65099
The articulations work OK. However not as quick as a goose neck. It has a large magnet in the base that works OK with BS vibration. Don?t think it would hold with lumpy wood on lathe. Easy to put screws through the feet.

JCB home made. About $2
Attachment 65103

Harbor Freight $13
Attachment 65104
This is another HF. Basically the same as the $15. However, a few less features. I don?t think that this one will hold a curly fluorescent lamp.

High Intensity About $20
Attachment 65104
Good enough I don?t change it. Not good enough that I would purchase another just like it.

Lowe?s $10
Attachment 65105
However this one has a goose neck (not as long as the above Lowe?s units). It moves quickly and easily. The base is a clamp (see previous notes).

If the Gods are with us you should have the correct text with the pics.

Well my copy says you have pics. Can someone unscrew this? If so thanks.

Enjoy,

JimB OK here they are in order of the text entries.

Set Pieces: The Neutra House In Mike Mills' 'Beginners'

latimesblogs.latimes.com:

After snagging a Golden Globe and a SAG award, Christopher Plummer seems like a good bet for the supporting actor Oscar for his portrayal of Hal, a 75-year-old retired museum director who comes out of the closet in director Mike Mills' autobiographical "Beginners." Plummer was ably abetted by Ewan MacGregor (who plays Hal's son, Oliver), Melanie Laurent (Oliver's girlfriend) and Cosmo, the Jack Russell terrier, but Los Angeles architecture and design also play key roles in the Focus Features film, now available on Blu-ray, DVD and video on demand.

Boy testifies at grandfather's child abuse trial (AP)

PHOENIX ? A 9-year-old boy testified Wednesday that his grandfather hit him in the face, causing his nose to bleed, and kicked him and his two brothers during a pair of miles-long hikes at the Grand Canyon last summer.

Prosecutors have alleged that Christopher Alan Carlson deprived his three grandsons of food and water and pushed, choked and repeatedly kicked them during hikes on Aug. 15 and Aug. 28, when the temperature soared to 108 degrees.

The statements from the boy in the trial were the first he's made publicly about the charges against his grandfather, who faces six counts of felony child abuse. The 45-year-old from Indianapolis has pleaded not guilty in the case and could face life in prison. The trial opened in Phoenix federal court on Wednesday.

Under questioning from prosecutor Camille Bibles, the boy also said that Carlson would pinch pressure points in their back that "kinda hurt" during the hike up from the Grand Canyon.

"We would slow down because we were kind of exhausted. He started kicking us and telling us we had to hurry," he said, adding that his eldest brother "kept falling and he had cramps and his stomach started hurting on the way out."

A criminal complaint said Carlson put his grandsons ? who were 12, 9 and 8 years old at the time ? in circumstances "likely to cause death or serious bodily injuries."

But investigators have also said that Carlson told them that the boys were overweight and that he thought hiking the Grand Canyon would help get them into shape.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Williams portrayed Carlson as an active health nut who had a firm hand and wanted to show the boys the world. Like anyone after a long hike, the boys were tired, hungry and thirsty, but Carlson only allowed the boys to eat healthy food like tofu, hummus and veggie burgers, Williams said in his opening statement.

"I suppose to an 8, 9 or 10-year-old that might seem like child abuse if you like cheeseburgers, French fires and pizza," he said. "He wanted to get them from behind the TV, the games and fast food."

The 9-year-old, the youngest of the three brothers, testified that he experienced cramping, nausea and hunger during the miles-long treks.

But he also told jurors that his grandfather took the boys on many "awesome" adventurous trips. In between the two hikes, Carlson took the boys on a tour of the Hoover Dam, to rides atop the Stratosphere hotel and a Criss Angel magic show in Las Vegas, and to Disneyland in California.

Jurors smiled as the boy also spoke of trips to Mexico, Belize, Honduras and across the western United States last summer with Carlson and his two older brothers. The trips often included long hikes, swimming and fishing in the ocean and thrill rides at amusement parks.

Although investigators have said Carlson withheld food and water, the boy testified that he and his brothers were allowed to drink water most of the time and snacked on celery, carrots, tofu and low-carb hummus during the hikes.

The criminal complaint said that one brother feared that another brother would fall to his death because Carlson forced him to walk on the edge of the trail even though he was cramping and falling down. Another brother said that when he fell, Carlson picked him up by the throat and threw him to the ground, and another said Carlson had slammed his face into a rock, the complaint said

Investigators said the boys were covered in cuts, bruises and scars that backed up their stories. But Williams told jurors Wednesday the injuries "are consistent with boys who are just normal boys" who had an especially active summer.

"There's nothing life-threatening about a blister," Williams said. "If these kids were abused they were abused by kindness and all the fun and trips they took over the summer."

A ranger with binoculars spotted the group during their 19-mile hike on Aug. 28, the same day a man died on another trail from heat exposure. The ranger reported seeing Carlson shoving the oldest boy and whipping him with a rolled-up T-shirt.

Rangers fed the boys and gave them water after one showed symptoms of heat stroke and the other two had signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Under questioning from Williams, the boy said the kicking didn't hurt much most of the time and that he often gets nosebleeds for no reason. He also said his grandfather was in a hurry on the Aug. 28 hike to get to the top of the Grand Canyon so they could watch the sunset together.

But Bibles said in her opening statement that Carlson used the Grand Canyon as a weapon in child abuse.

"These hikes became a life or death situation for these children at the hands of the person that was supposed to be protecting them," she said.

92% Beauty and the Beast (In 3D)

    All Critics (83) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (7) | DVD (36)

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

Despite some excessive narrative streamlining, this 1991 release was the best Disney animated feature in years, full of charm and humor.

I admit it: I wrote this more than 20 years ago. But, like " Beauty and the Beast" itself, I think it stands the test of time.

Disney, please understand ... what people are actually showing up for ... they just want to see classic Disney on the big screen. The 3D is incidental.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

The 3D is unnecessary - but it doesn't spoil the fun of Beauty and the Beast.
