Perseid 2013 meteor hunt: How to stargaze the ?tears of a saint?

The annual Perseid meteor shower will reach its height starting Sunday night. Here are some tips for spotting these bits of rock and ice known as shooting stars.

For many Americans, catching a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower, which will reach its height starting Sunday, is an annual summer rite. But what about when a clear, star-studded sky seems devoid of shooting stars right when the Perseids are supposedly turning up the heat?

Turns out meteor hunting isn?t as easy as it sounds, and can be anticlimactic. But, hey, it doesn?t take much, or long, to become a Perseid veteran.

Starting around July 17th every year and culminating around the 10th of August, the so-called Tears of St. Lawrence, named after the date of the Catholic saint?s martyrdom, burst through the Earth?s outer layers, catch fire and flare out at speeds around 25 miles per second, depending on trajectory.

The meteors are really icy space boulders left behind by the Comet Swift-Tuttle, which the earth, hurtling through space, crashes into, whence our atmosphere absorbs the comet flotsam. One of the highest meteor falling rates from the Perseids was 173 an hour, in 2009. The annual Perseid display was first documented in 36 A.D.

To be sure, getting up early and finding a dark field from which to stare up can be difficult by itself. At least parts of the sky must be fog and cloud-free. A risen moon, either waxing or waning, can make viewing difficult. Plus on a good, clear night, there?s a whole big sky to observe. Named the Perseids because that is the constellation from which they appear to emanate, the meteors can in fact be seen anywhere across the whole sky.

The key is to get comfortable on a blanket, on your back, and preferably find someone pleasant with whom to while away a few skygazing hours. ?Have a sip of something hot to ward off the dew.

Fortunately, this year the viewing odds are better than usual. At least in most parts of the US, the moon will be long below the horizon in the wee hours, leaving the sky dark for the hours when meteor hunting is the best.

What?s more, keep meteor-gazing simple, Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomy professor at Foothill College in Los Altos, Calif., tells the San Francisco Chronicle?s David Perlman.

One rule is to not even bother with a telescope or binoculars. ?Your eyes are the best tools, because the faint flashes can appear anywhere at all in the sky, and meteor showers are far more subtle than fireworks,? advises Mr. Fraknoi.

Even on the busiest Perseid nights, most of the meteors can?t be seen, largely because they burn out some 50 miles above the earth?s surface. But patience, as usual, tends to reward. Remember that they?re often as quick as a blink, and flash at a rate of about one a minute, or an expected 70 meteors an hour.

The best meteor hunting tip: Don?t expect to see one right away. Just lay back, relax, and a few tears of a saint will eventually zip out of the sky, trailing excited whispers.?

Rescued teen awaits reunion with father in Idaho

CASCADE, Idaho (AP) ? A California teen missing for more than a week after she was abducted by a man suspected of killing her mother and brother has been rescued, her captor killed, and a reunion with her father was expected Sunday at an Idaho hospital.

But for law enforcement investigating the ordeal, there is still plenty of work to be done.

FBI agents are processing evidence at the campsite in central Idaho's Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness where they first discovered 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and the man suspected of abducting her, 40-year-old James Lee DiMaggio. Details about the operation that ended in Hannah's rescue are being released slowly.

Law enforcement agents first spotted two people who looked like Anderson and DiMaggio on Saturday afternoon, as they flew over the wilderness area in a plane, according to a statement from Ada County Sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Dearden.

The air was filled with smoke blown in from distant wildfires, and that made both flying and seeing the ground tough, Dearden said. The law enforcement commanders decided to send in an FBI Hostage Rescue Team immediately to get Hannah while they could.

The mountainous area is extremely steep, and the closest point where the helicopters could drop the team was more than a two-hour hike away. The agents crept close to the camp, waited until DiMaggio and Hannah separated, and then moved in.

The FBI moved the teen to an area where she could be picked up by a helicopter. The FBI won't release details about what happened between DiMaggio and law enforcement at the campsite until an investigation is complete, other than to say DiMaggio was shot and killed.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Mary Rook from Salt Lake City said the FBI will continue to work with law enforcement in both Idaho and California as the case transitions back to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

Anderson appeared to be uninjured and was taken to an Idaho hospital where crisis counselors and health care providers were assisting her. Her father was expected to arrive in Idaho on Sunday to reunite with her.

"We will make sure she gets as much care as possible, physically and emotionally," said Dearden.

The FBI said it was sending a team to investigate what unfolded before, during and after the shooting.

The location wasn't far from what had been the last known sighting of the pair. A horseback rider called authorities Thursday night to report that he had seen two people who resembled Anderson and DiMaggio with camping gear on a trail near the lake. The rider, whose name wasn't released, didn't realize they were subjects of a massive search until he got home and saw news reports. He was expected to speak to media Sunday.

The case began when the charred bodies of Hannah Anderson's mother, Christina Anderson, 44, and the teen's 8-year-old brother, Ethan Anderson, were found in DiMaggio's burning house outside San Diego, near the Mexico border.

DiMaggio was close to the family. Christina Anderson's husband, Brett Anderson, has described him as a best friend and said the children thought of him as an uncle.

Authorities have said DiMaggio had an "unusual infatuation" with Hannah, although the father said he never saw any strange behavior.

An Amber Alert was issued, and tips led investigators to Oregon after DiMaggio and the teen were reportedly spotted there.

But it wasn't until the Idaho horseback rider called in his tip that investigators found a major lead ? DiMaggio's car, hidden under brush at a trailhead on the border of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in central Idaho.

San Diego County Sheriff William D. Gore announced Hannah's rescue and DiMaggio's death from a news conference in California. He said members of his office notified Hannah's father, Brett Anderson, of her rescue.

"He was very relieved and very excited and looking forward to being reunited with his daughter," Gore said.

The father described a range of emotion in a text message to CNN.

"I am nervous excited saddened 4 my wife and son and worried what my daughter has been through," he wrote to the network. "It's now healing time. Keep us in your prayers."

Reprivatization of RBS bank 'unrealistic' in next five years: UK minister

By Costas Pitas

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's largely state-owned Royal Bank of Scotland is unlikely to be reprivatized before 2018, Business Secretary Vince Cable said in an interview published on The Telegraph newspaper website on Saturday.

"I don't think it would be sensible for the government to set a rigid timetable, but given where we start from, I think it is pretty unrealistic to think of RBS going back into private ownership this parliament or probably within five years," Cable said.

Britain is expected to go to the polls in 2015, with seemingly different views between the governing coalition partners as to how quickly the government should part with its 82-percent stake in the bank.

Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron has spoken in favor of a speedy restructuring and said during a business trip to India in February that he was keen to return RBS to private ownership as soon as possible.

Cable, a senior lawmaker in the junior coalition Liberal Democrat Party, appeared to suggest that it will take longer to return the bank to private hands, and that it could be broken up.

"I think there is a very strong argument for saying that the bank got too big and indeed that was the source of its undoing," Cable said.

"But we are having to balance the benefits of breaking up the bank (and) the potential benefits for competition (with) the significant costs."

On Thursday, Reuters reported that it could take until the end of next month before the bank decides how to sell more than 300 of its UK branches, a condition of the 2008 taxpayer bailout it received.

Asked if the Royal Bank of Scotland would be better as a UK-focused retail and corporate bank, Cable said:

"We (I and Finance Minister George Osborne) are not nationalists and of course there is an argument for international banking."

"But we do need to have strong UK banks, particularly supporting our business community. At the moment that market does not function well."

God of War II Director Returns to Sony Santa Monica

Cory Barlog is back at Sony Santa Monica and working on something "huge."

Sony Santa Monica has been busy as of late. In addition to the development of God of War: Ascension, which released earlier this year, and its work assisting Ready At Dawn on the PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886, screenwriter Michael Angeli recently revealed he was working with the studio on a new project. Now, it's been announced that God of War 2 director Cory Barlog has returned to the studio, and he's working on something big.

"What am I working on, you ask?" he wrote in a recent post on the PlayStation blog. "Sadly, I cannot tell you... yet. But I can say that it is freaking huge, and it will live up to the standards that I helped establish here at [Sony Santa Monica]." He added that the studio is currently searching "high and low for the best of the BEST" to assemble an "Ocean's 11" level team to work on his project. Vague as that is, it would seem that Sony Santa Monica is prepping for something exciting.

Barlog left Sony Santa Monica in 2007 for what he's described as a "creative walkabout," hoping to "get the experience I knew I needed to become a master craftsman." Apparently now feeling "ready" he hopes to use his "newly honed powers of awesome to create something that will rock the free world." Obviously we'll have to see how his new project turns out before passing judgment on his degree of "awesome" mastery. That said, you have to at least appreciate his enthusiasm. Videogames may be a business, but it's always nice to see someone that enjoys what they're doing.

Hundreds protest in London against Russian anti-gay law

By Costas Pitas

LONDON (Reuters) - Hundreds of people protested in London on Saturday against a Russian anti-gay propaganda law that has attracted international condemnation as the world athletics championships kick off in Moscow.

Gathering in the British capital near the residence of Prime Minister David Cameron and the foreign ministry, demonstrators called for the government to push Russia to repeal the laws.

"Putin is the 'Czar of Homophobia'," veteran gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell wrote on his website ahead of the protests.

"His regime has outlawed the public expression of LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual) identity and affection - and prohibited the advocacy of LGBT human rights - in circumstances where a person under 18 might see it."

Clutching banners bearing slogans such as "Love Russia. Hate Homophobia" and rainbow flags, protesters called for a change in the policy that has attracted criticism from world leaders including U.S. President Barack Obama.

Critics of the anti-propaganda law have said it effectively disallows all gay rights rallies and could be used to prosecute anyone voicing support for homosexuals.

The law, as well as a ban on adoptions of children by same-sex couples, are part of a more conservative course taken by President Vladimir Putin on social issues since his return to the Kremlin in May, 2012.

On Friday, Olympic president Jacques Rogge asked Russia to explain how the country will implement the law in detail ahead of next year's Sochi Winter Olympics.

Cameron tweeted on Saturday that Britain would not boycott the Games over the issue, in response to a letter from comedian Stephen Fry who said British athletes should stay away.

"I share your deep concern about the abuse of gay people in Russia," Cameron wrote.

"However, I believe we can better challenge prejudice as we attend, rather than boycotting the Winter Olympics."

Sebastian Coe, who headed the organising committee for the 2012 London Olympics, also argued against a boycott.

"It's an issue we'll need to address, but an issue that's not one of a boycott," he told reporters in Moscow on the first day's action of the August 10-18 world athletics championships.

Britain's parliament approved gay marriage earlier this year - the final step in a string of recent law changes designed to bring about equality - with the first civil ceremonies expected in the spring of 2014.

Internationally, over 350,000 people have signed an online petition calling on world leaders and Russian politicians to push for a repeal of anti-gay laws and to protect citizens from violence and discrimination.

Gays bars in the United States and other countries began boycotting Russian vodka earlier this month in protest at the laws.

Stories including the murder of a Russian teen reportedly killed due to his sexuality have gained much media attention in Britain and other western countries in recent days.

Stocks finished the week in negative territory, with major indexes logging their worst week since June, as investors found little reason to buy following the market's recent highs and amid ongoing worries about when the Fed may start to wind down its stimulus program.

"This is continuation of a sideways market that we've been experiencing for much of the week," said Cam Albright, director of asset allocation at Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors. "There's no big catalyst that's out there that's pushing us forward or backwards."?

Most recently, Dallas Fed president Richard Fisher reiterated on Thursday that the central bank will likely begin cutting back on its massive bond-buying stimulus in September as long as economic data continues to improve.

"The assumption has been that September is a likely start date and the only thing that would hold them back is very disappointing economic news between now and then," said Albright. "But I'm not sure if the market is prepared for an abrupt end of the QE program ? the concept of tapering has led market participants to believe this would be a more drawn out event."?

China's benchmark?Shanghai Composite rallied 1 percent for the week to close above the 2,050 mark, lifted by better-than-expected industrial output numbers for July, plus a healthy increase in fixed asset investment in the first seven months of the year. Meanwhile,?Chinese consumer prices were unchanged in July on the previous month, and producer prices fell an annualized 2.3 percent.

"More spending is called for, while further acceleration in credit growth is discouraged. This approach requires significant improvement in capital allocation efficiency to work. Mayor Rob Ford appears to slur words at Taste of the Danforth, videos show

Weiner: 'I'm Responsible for This Behavior'

New videos and photos posted online of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford at the Taste of the Danforth on Friday night are raising more questions about the mayor?s behaviour.

Videos posted to YouTube appear to show the mayor, who is holding a large cup of Tim Hortons coffee, slurring his words, saying he wants ?to go up to the party.?

Dressed in a black suit and tie, the mayor, who was not accompanied by any staff on the videos, poses for photos with residents. On one video he is heard to repeat three times that ?I?m not driving.?

According to one witness named Mala, who refused to give his last name, he said he saw Ford standing next to his Escalade SUV on Greenwood Ave. a few blocks south of the Danforth between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m.

Mala told the Star?s David Rider that neighbours were talking to Ford about taxes and political things.

?He was alone, he didn?t want to talk about serious stuff. He wanted to talk about football and soccer and stuff,? Mala said.

?When I approached, he wasn?t making much sense,? he said. ?The mayor looked like he was totally out of it ? He was slurring. It was noticeable.?

The mayor?s spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.

The quality of the videos posted to You Tube from Taste of the Danforth, a weekend festival in Greektown, is mixed as the camera moves erratically in some cases.

Others at the festival quickly posted their own photos of the mayor on Twitter on Friday night. They included:

Questions around the mayor?s behaviour have increased in recent months after former mayoral candidate Sarah Thomson first accused Ford of groping her behind at an event in March. Thomson said the mayor behaved inappropriately.

Ford immediately called Thomson?s allegations false.

The Star also reported that the mayor had been asked to leave the Garrison Ball in February after organizers were concerned he was impaired.

Then in May, the Star and U.S. web site Gawker reported that reporters were shown a video that allegedly showed the mayor smoking crack cocaine.

Gawker then started a fundraising campaign to buy the video, but even though $200,000 was raised, Gawker editor John Cook said he could not locate the video or its owner. The money was eventually donated to charity.

A week after the story broke in May, Ford addressed the issue, after refusing to discuss the video.

?I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine,? he told reporters at city hall.

Ford added at the time: ?As for a video, I cannot comment on a video that I have never seen or does not exist. It is most unfortunate, very unfortunate, that my colleagues and the great people of this city have been exposed to the fact that I have been judged by the media without evidence.?

Golf: Scott, Furyk share one-stroke lead at PGA Championship

PITTSFORD, N.Y. ? With every major, Adam Scott is making a convincing case that he isn?t satisfied with just a green jacket.

Scott ran off five straight birdies early in his round at soft and vulnerable Oak Hill, and finished with a 15-foot par for a 5-under 65 that gave him a share of the lead Thursday with Jim Furyk in the PGA Championship.

Scott finally became a major champion at Augusta National in April when he won a playoff at the Masters. Just three weeks ago, he had the lead on the back nine at Muirfield in the British Open until he made four bogeys to fall back. In the last major of the year, Scott at times looked unstoppable.

His five straight birdies quickly put him atop the leaderboard with Furyk, and after a 71-minute delay when storms moved into the area, Scott added a sixth birdie on the par-3 15th to reach 6 under.

He was on pace to tie the major championship record at Oak Hill until a three-putt bogey on the 16th.

?Just got on a bit of a roll and hit a few shots close,? Scott said. ?I didn?t have too much putting to do. You?ve got to take advantage when it happens, because it doesn?t happen too much in the majors. Nothing to complain about in 65.?

There were hardly any complaints on Oak Hill, a course that has yielded only 10 72-hole scores under par in five previous majors.

It?s only Thursday, and the players felt as if they got off easy. Rain overnight and humid conditions kept the course soft, and birdies were dropping at an alarming pace.

Except for Tiger Woods.

The world?s No. 1 player made only two birdies despite playing in the still of the morning, and he watched his round fall apart with a bogey on par-5 fourth and a double bogey on his final hole when his flop shot out of a deep rough floated into a bunker. Woods had a 71, not a bad start at Oak Hill, except on this day.

There were 35 rounds under par, compared with only a dozen rounds in the 60s when the PGA Championship was here 10 years ago.

?The round realistically could have been under par easily,? Woods said.

Furyk, who won his lone major at the U.S. Open in 2003 at Olympia Fields, has gone nearly three years since his last win at the Tour Championship to capture the FedEx Cup and win PGA Tour player of the year. Still fresh are the four close calls from a year ago, including the U.S. Open.

He was as steady as Scott, rarely putting himself in trouble until the end of the round. Furyk missed the fairway to the right and had to pitch out because of thick rough and trees blocking his way to the green. That led to his only bogey, but still his lowest first-round score in 19 appearances at the PGA Championship.

?Usually disappointed with ending the day on a bogey,? Furyk said. ?But you know, 65, PGA, is not so bad.?

David Hearn of Canada, an alternate until a week ago, had a 66 in the morning. Also at 66 was Lee Westwood, who had his best score ever in the PGA and offered evidence that there was no hangover from losing a 54-hole lead in the British Open last month.

There were no record scores at Oak Hill despite the soft conditions, just a lot of low rounds.

?If you don?t hit it in the fairways, then you won?t score well,? Westwood said. ?These guys are good. There are a lot of good players playing in the tournament. Somebody is going to hit it straight, and somebody is going to shoot a good score.?

Even Rory McIlroy got in on the act. The defending champion, at the end of a major season that has been a major disappointment, came out firing with three birdies on the opening four holes and made the turn in 32 until back-to-back bogeys. He wound up with a 69.

A resurgent Paul Casey was in the group at 67, while U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, British Open runner-up Henrik Stenson and the ageless Miguel Angel Jimenez were among 11 players at 68.

British Open champion Phil Mickelson wound up with the same score as Woods, only they arrived at 71 on vastly different roads. Woods had only two birdies. Mickelson shot 71 despite two double bogeys. On the par-5 fourth hole, he hooked his tee shot out-of-bounds and nearly lost the next tee shot in the same place. And on the closing hole, Mickelson looked as if he was back at Winged Foot ? wild left off the tees, a reckless attempt into the trees and another double bogey.

He headed straight to the practice range, even summoning coach Butch Harmon down from the Sky Sports television booth.

Scott hasn?t won since the Masters, though he has shown full control of his swing. He looks at these next 10 years as a chance to win more majors and establish himself as a major force in his generation.

?I put a lot into my game the last two years with a focus on the big tournaments,? Scott said. ?Everyone around me has had the same focus, as well. We come here to do business.?

Microsoft tries to woo former MobileMe users with 15GB of extra free SkyDrive space

A few days ago, we reported that Apple would not be extending the deadline for its former MobileMe users to access up to 50GB of free space on its iCloud service. The free space offer finally ends on Sept. 30 and once that happens, those ex-MobileMe subscribers will find their free space cut down to just 5 GB on iCloud, although they have the option of purchasing more space.

Now Microsoft is using this opportunity to entice those former MobileMe users to dump iCloud entirely and come on over to Microsoft's SkyDrive service. In a post today on the official SkyDrive account, Microsoft stated:

We assume that "extra" 15 GB means that MobileMe users will get that amount of storage on top of the free 7GB of space that Microsoft gives all SkyDrive users. That means MobileMe users will actually get access to 22 GB of free SkyDrive space for one year.

This interesting attempt at taking some of Apple's customers away comes as Microsoft also has to come up with an all new name for SkyDrive, after losing a trademark battle with BSkyB last week over the brand.

China indicators suggest slowdown is leveling out

(AP) ? China's factory output and auto sales accelerated in July, adding to signs a slump in the world's second-largest economy might be stabilizing.

A decline in wholesale prices slowed, suggesting weak demand might be strengthening, according to figures released Friday. That added to earlier data showing July imports rebounded from the previous month's contraction.

The positive indicators could help to support Chinese leaders who have been resisting pressure to stimulate the economy. They have said they want to focus instead on longer-term reforms aimed at making the economy more efficient.

Despite the improvement in the latest indicators, growth is unlikely to return to earlier double-digit rates.

"The China boom is over and we need to get comfortable with steadily slower growth rates," said Andy Rothman of CLSA in a report. "The Party leadership is comfortable with current economic conditions and will focus on longer-term restructuring rather than on a short-term stimulus."

China's economic growth fell to a two-decade low of 7.5 percent in the second quarter but the latest trade and industrial data suggest the slowdown might be leveling out.

Growth in factory output accelerated to 9.7 percent from June's 8.9 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics reported. Investment in factories and other fixed assets rose 20.1 percent.

Producer prices, or prices of goods as they left factories, fell 2.3 percent from a year earlier. But that was smaller than June's 2.7 percent decline, suggesting demand might be strengthening following a slump that has caused producer prices to decline steadily for more than a year.

"The data came in generally better-than-expected, suggesting some decent pickup in activity momentum," said JP Morgan economist Haibin Zhu in a report.

Consumer inflation held steady at June's 2.7 percent level, below the official 3.5 percent target for the year. That could give Chinese leaders room to stimulate the economy with higher government spending or cuts in taxes or interest rates. They have tried, however, to avoid a costly, across-the-board stimulus after heavy spending in response to the 2008 global crisis fueled inflation.

Pressure for prices to rise has been relatively low because supply exceeds demand in many industries. That has led to price-cutting wars among competitors, squeezing companies financially and forcing some into bankruptcies. Communist leaders have ordered companies in industries including steel, cement and glass to shut down some factories to reduce excess production capacity.

Premier Li Keqiang said in June that there was little room to stimulate the economy with short-term measures such as higher government spending.

Li said communist leaders would focus on reforms aimed at supporting entrepreneurs and encouraging domestic consumption to reduce China's reliance on exports and investment. The government has cut taxes on small businesses and stepped up spending on building railways.

July imports soared 10.9 percent over a year earlier in a sign of stronger Chinese domestic demand.

"A solid increase in commodity imports in July suggests that investment is picking up, possibly helped by an official pivot towards rail investment," said Alaistair Chan of Moody's Analytics in a report.

Government efforts to cool surging housing costs with curbs on lending and sales have helped to slow a rise in prices but also have hurt purchases of furniture, appliances and other goods by home buyers.

BMI Categories:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5?24.9
Overweight = 25?29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

It will be interesting to see what bell curve we get. chin

If you are a number like say 24 instead of 24.3, choose the 22 to 24 option

Facebook Messenger for iOS adds Instagram photo sharing

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is rolling out an updated version of its over-the-top Messenger application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, adding support for Instagram photo sharing.

Instagram's app update introduces a number of new features.

With Facebook Messenger for iOS version 2.6, users can tap the paper clip icon in any message to add images from Instagram or any other photo stored on their iPhone Camera Roll. Messenger for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android added Instagram sharing earlier this year.

Facebook launched Messenger in mid-2011 in an effort to steer users away from conventional operator SMS solutions. In addition to text messaging, the app also supports features like free VoIP calling, voice messaging and group interactions. Instagram enables users to snap, filter and manipulate photos and then upload their work to social media sites. Facebook acquired Instagram for $715 million last year and recently announced that the app boasts 130 million monthly users who have shared 16 billion photos.

Integrating Instagram support should help Facebook Messenger more effectively compete with rival OTT messaging apps. Earlier this week, cross-platform app?WhatsApp Messenger revealed that its 300 million active users share 325 million photos each day. Snapchat--which enables users to capture photos (a.k.a. "snaps"), overlay a text message and transmit the image to friends--touts 200 million private photo messages each day, up from 60 million in February.

In related news, Instagram updated its standalone iOS and Android apps, highlighted by video import functionality. Users can now import footage from their library, edit the clip and share it with the Instagram network regardless of when the video was captured. Instagram for iOS is also adding automatic photo straightening, while Instagram for Android is now available to devices running Android 4.0, a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich.

NASA details mission to discover whether Europa moon is habitable

NASA details mission to discover whether Europa moon is habitable

With potential oceans flowing below its icy surface, NASA thinks Jupiter's Europa moon is promising candidate to harbor organic life. As such, the space agency and its JPL laboratory are looking to send a lander there within a decade, and have detailed what it wants it to explore in a new paper. Key goals include measuring the organic content of surface and near-surface chemistry, exploring mineralogy, measuring the thickness and salinity of the oceans and ice, imaging surface formations and looking at microscopic ice and non-ice grains. Researchers also looked at potential landing sites, and were torn between a more interesting, active site like "Thera Macula" and a more stable location with ancient geology. NASA's Juno mission, launched in August 2011, is expected to help settle such issues when it probes Europa from orbit starting in 2016. Though it'd be hard to top Curiosity's setdown, a Europa landing could be even more dramatic, considering the moon is over 10 times farther away than Mars and never gets above minus 370 degrees Fahrenheit.

Matt Janning has an NBA out in his contract with Cibona Zagreb

QUOTE ( RedMambaPT @ 03.08.2013, 17:58 )

Google Play edition HTC One and Galaxy S4 start to see Android 4.3 OTA

GPe

The latest version of Jelly Bean seems to be on it's way, giving us a better idea of what "timely" updates are

Scattered reports of users with both the HTC One Google Play edition and the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition phones seeing an OTA update to Android 4.3 are coming in this evening. We've seen the kernel source for both devices uploaded to the web — a legal requirement before any software is delivered — so we've been expecting the updates.

Users should see the same basic experience that Nexus users have been playing with, plus the few minor additions that Samsung and HTC have made with Boomsound and Flipcover support.

There are bound to be a few bugs, but perhaps the most exciting part of the whole thing is that we've got a good idea what "timely" updates means, at least this time around.

If you've got either of the Google Play edition devices, start hammering that button.
