Women's Swimming and Diving Class of 2016 Announced - Yale ...

September 29, 2012

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The Yale women's swimming and diving team will turn it up to 11 this season as they welcome 11 new Bulldogs to the squad.?

Eight swimmers and three divers have been added to the roster, meaning the team is bringing in nearly three times the number of athletes that graduated last spring.? Last season the Bulldogs said goodbye to three swimmers and one diver, the latter being captain Rachel Rosenberg '12.? With one diver leaving and three more being added in this group of incoming freshmen, Chris Berg?re's diving squad will double this year.? The role of captain, meanwhile, is back on the swimming side as senior Joan Weaver will look to lead the team to a successful season.

In addition to this new group of freshman athletes, the Bulldogs also have a new coaching staff this season.? Jim Henry was brought on to replace Cristina Teuscher as Yale's Robert J.H. Kiphuth Director of Swimming and Diving after coaching for six years at the University of Texas.? Joining him is Danielle Korman, who will serve as assistant coach at Yale following a four-year stint at Johns Hopkins.

"It is an honor to have been chosen as the women's swimming coach at Yale," said Robert J.H. Kiphuth Head Women's?Coach Henry.? "August and September have been months of discovery and hospitality at Yale for the new coaching staff.? Coach Korman and I look to build upon the strong history and tradition of success in swimming and diving at Yale. We are excited about this team's positive energy and commitment to the program.? Coach Berg?re and the divers will be a tremendous asset to the team throughout the year.? Our seniors have demonstrated in the month of September that they will lead, and the incoming freshmen bring a focus and work ethic that benefits the entire group. We are all fired up for the first official day of practice."

Of the eight swimmers in the Class of 2016, three competed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb., this past June.? Five of the 11 are high school All-Americans.? Here is a closer look at this year's freshman class:

Mo. Sen. McCaskill defends self as polite, calm

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill defended herself as "polite and calm" Friday in response to accusations from Republican challenger Todd Akin that she wasn't very "ladylike" in a recent debate.

McCaskill told The Associated Press that some of Akin's remarks have left her "a little speechless." Akin said Thursday that McCaskill "came out swinging" in their Sept. 21 debate. He said that contrasted with her 2006 debates against then-Sen. Jim Talent, when Akin said, "she had a confidence and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."

McCaskill frequently criticized Akin's policies, beginning with her opening statement, during the debate hosted by the Missouri Press Association.

But the Democratic senator said Friday: "I'm hoping that people will weigh in and defend me that I was polite and calm. This wildcat, you know, furious and unladylike is kind of a headscratcher."

Akin's comments ? whether mistaken or intentional ? have loomed large in Missouri's Senate race since shortly after he won the Aug. 7 Republican primary. They also have generated ripples through national politics, including the presidential race and Republicans' efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

Last month, Akin told a TV interviewer asking about his opposition to abortion that women's bodies have ways of averting pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." Akin has apologized repeatedly since then but rejected calls from top Republicans ? including presidential nominee Mitt Romney ? to quit the race. Meanwhile, Akin has lost the financial backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the deep-pocketed Crossroads group affiliated with GOP strategist Karl Rove.

Democrats have attempted to link Akin's "ladylike" comment to his remark about "legitimate rape" to suggest he is insensitive to women and to help drive their own fundraising efforts.

The Democratic National Committee and Emily's List, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, both cited the remarks in fundraising emails Thursday. On Friday, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted Akin's remarks as the centerpiece of an online fundraising drive to raise $75,000 for McCaskill in two days.

Akin also received a recent fundraising boost, picking up the endorsement Thursday of the Senate Conservatives Fund, whose members pledged $290,000 for his campaign.

Study: Black youths exposed to more alcohol ads

Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth

Researchers cited this vodka ad from Blender and OK! magazines as an example of ads that reach a disproportionate number of African American youths.

By Bridget HuberFairWarning

African American youth culture is steeped in alcohol. References to booze have long been rife in rap music, and Jay Z, Sean ?P. Diddy? Combs and Ludacris are among the hip-hop luminaries who have promoted alcohol.

A new study?puts some fresh data behind long-standing concerns about alcohol marketing to black kids. Young African Americans ages 12 to 20 see far more alcohol ads on television and in magazines than youths in general, according to the report published Thursday by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Researchers said two key factors are at play: Many alcohol ads specifically target African Americans and African American youth consume more media than youth overall. For example, African American youths watched 53 percent more television than youths in general in 2010, according to Nielsen data cited in the study.

Frank Coleman, senior vice president of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, a leading trade group, said he hadn?t seen the study and couldn?t comment on it. But he said the industry does not target youth. ?The beer, wine and spirits industry (is) totally opposed to underage drinking and spends millions of dollars a year fighting it,? Coleman said.

Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth

Study found that young African Americans see more alcohol ads in magazines, like this one that appeared in Vibe.

Despite the study findings, young blacks drink less than youths of other racial and ethnic groups. Researchers say this may be linked to factors such as poverty, social norms and religion that temper some of advertising?s impacts.

But African Americans who drink seem to suffer more serious consequences, said David Jernigan, director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth, perhaps because they tend to have less access to health care and substance abuse treatment, live in poorer neighborhoods and are incarcerated more frequently.

Alcohol consumption is linked to three leading causes of death among young African Americans ? homicide, suicide and accidental injury. ?There?s rationale for being extra careful,? said Jernigan, whose group receives funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has put out dozens of reports on alcohol marketing to youths over the last decade.

Coleman said the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth?s research on the topic is flawed. It ?has repeatedly issued press releases saying the industry?s advertising is increasingly targeting youth,? he said, even as statistics show that underage drinking is declining.

He pointed to a recent federal government survey?showing that teenage drinking fell to a historic low in 2011, when 25.1 percent of 12 to 20-year olds reported using alcohol in the past month.

David Jernigan, executive director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth.

Jernigan?s study, however, stops short of claiming that advertisers are targeting black youth. ?I can?t call it targeting because targeting implies intent and I can?t prove intent,? Jernigan said.

Marketers? messages are increasingly reinforced by hip-hop culture, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, reported last year. An analysis?of rap lyrics showed 64 percent of the most popular songs released from 2002 to 2005 referenced alcohol. This marked a steep rise; an earlier analysis of rap songs from 1994 to 1997 showed 44 percent contained alcohol references.

Booze ads are also common in magazines read by black Americans, said Lorreen Pryor, president of the Black Youth Leadership Project?in Sacramento, Calif. ?You keep flipping the pages and the (alcohol ads) are back to back.?

The study comes amid efforts to ban alcohol advertising on public property in some cities. A Los Angeles coalition has asked the City Council to ban alcohol ads on property such as bus shelters; last year, the company that manages the city?s bus benches agreed to not sell alcohol ads. Boston recently stopped advertising booze on public transit and advocates hope to extend the ban in other public areas. Minority youth frequently use public transportation and this would help shield them from alcohol ads, said Bruce Lee Livingston, executive director of Alcohol Justice, an industry watchdog.

The new study suggests marketers are falling short on limiting youth exposure to alcohol ads. Young blacks saw 32 percent more booze ads in magazines and 17 percent more on television than youth overall in 2009, researchers found. While African American youth were exposed 26 percent fewer radio ads for alcohol than youth in general, they heard 32 percent more radio ads for hard liquor.

Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth

This Skyy Vodka ad ran in Blender magazine.

In magazines, African American youth were 92 percent more likely to see ads for ?alcopops? -- cheap, sweet, fizzy alcohol drinks that are of particular concern to advocates because they appeal to youth.

Alcohol advertising in magazines, overall, declined by nearly 20 percent between 2003 and 2008, researchers found, likely due to a general decline in magazine advertising.

In contrast, cable television has seen a ?major ramp up? in alcohol ads ? particularly for hard liquor, Jernigan said. The four largest television networks -- ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC -- do not advertise distilled alcohol. But African American youth saw 20 percent more ads for hard liquor than youth overall. ?TV is going in the wrong direction,? Jernigan said.

Members of the beer, wine and distilled spirits trade associations have agreed to avoid?placing ads during TV programs with audiences made up of 28.4 percent or more people under age 21. Still, advocates say these voluntary standards are poorly enforced. ?The self regulation pledge has not worked,? said Alcohol Justice?s Livingston, who would like to see government regulations.

While advertisers often say they can?t keep youth from seeing messages that are intended for adults, Jernigan isn?t buying it: ?The industry knows quite precisely what they are doing.?

Kodak plans to end consumer inkjet printer sales

(AP) ? Kodak said Friday that it plans to stop selling consumer inkjet printers and will eliminate 200 more jobs than previously projected as it requested more time to submit its framework for emerging from bankruptcy protection.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, wants the court to extend the exclusivity period for the filing of its plan until Feb. 28. After the exclusivity period expires, creditors may file competing plans.

In the months since its filing, Eastman Kodak Co. has worked to reshape itself, selling off businesses, eliminating jobs and slashing other costs, with the goal of emerging from court protection in 2013.

Kodak said earlier this year that it would stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames. Earlier this year, it sold Kodak Gallery, its online photo service business, to Shutterfly Inc. for $23.8 million.

In August, Kodak said that it was looking to sell its personalized imaging and document imaging businesses in order to focus on its printing and business services. Kodak's document imaging division makes scanners and offers related software and services. The personalized imaging business includes photo paper and still camera film products. It also offers souvenir photo products at theme parks and other venues.

The company also has been trying to sell off its collection of patents, but earlier this month it indefinitely postponed an auction of its imaging patent portfolios. The company said in court filings at the time that it was looking at other possibilities, including keeping the patents and creating a company to make money by licensing the technology.

On Friday, the company said it now plans to focus its consumer inkjet business on the sale of ink for its existing printers and start winding down sales of printers next year.

The move is in line with the company's goal of refocusing itself on commercial and packaging printing, along with other services, and is expected to significantly boost cash flow in the U.S. starting in the first half of 2013, Kodak said.

The company, whose workforce peaked at nearly 150,000 workers in 1988, has already cut 2,700 jobs this year. It originally planned to cut at least another 1,000 jobs, but boosted that figure to 1,200 on Friday.

Kodak said the 23 percent reduction in its employee ranks save the company more than $340 million per year and reduce its workforce to about 13,100 employees.

Kodak was founded in 1880, and it introduced the iconic Brownie camera in 1900, making hobby photography affordable for many people. Its Kodachrome film, introduced in 1935, became the first commercially successful amateur color film.

But the company has struggled in recent years, hurt by the shift toward digital photography and competition from Japanese companies such as Canon.

A hearing on the motion and other matters is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Steinbrueck to challenge Merkel in 2013

BERLIN (Reuters) - Peer Steinbrueck, an abrasive former finance minister, will lead the German Social Democrats' challenge to unseat chancellor Angela Merkel in a parliamentary election a year from now.

Announcing their "chancellor candidate" some months earlier than expected, the centre-left opposition took Germany by surprise on Friday; Steinbrueck, a combative veteran from the right of the SPD, marked out a campaign theme of tougher rules for banks and a goal of coalition government with the Greens.

Analysts saw his rapid emergence from a three-way struggle within his party as the outcome most threatening to Merkel, though polls show the conservative leader still well ahead.

Steinbrueck led Germany's response to the global economic crisis while serving as finance minister in Merkel's first government, a grand coalition from 2005-09. But the 65-year-old dismissed talk of forming another left-right pact, however the parties fare in a vote for the Bundestag due by October 2013.

"We want to oust this government. We want to make sure it isn't just partially replaced but completely replaced with an SPD-Greens government," he told a news conference, referring to the ecologist party currently ranked third in opinion polls.

The path was cleared for Steinbrueck's candidacy after two other SPD contenders, party chairman Sigmar Gabriel and former foreign minister Frank-Walker Steinmeier, stepped aside.

The election is no presidential style face-off but is fought by parties for parliamentary seats on the basis of proportional representation. However, the two traditional big parties set the tone for their campaigns according to their choice in advance of who will lead a government if they win a legislative majority.

Known for a quick wit and acerbic tongue, Steinbrueck is likely to mount much sharper attacks on Merkel than the more diplomatic Steinmeier and could also siphon away votes from her Christian Democrats (CDU) because of his centrist economic views and reputation as a safe pair of hands.

"Steinbrueck is definitely the most dangerous candidate because he appeals to the voters in the middle," said political scientist Gero Neugebauer at Berlin's Free University.

But a poll by Politbarometer released on Friday showed much higher personal support for Merkel. The 58-year-old chancellor, whose reputation has been much enhanced in the euro crisis, had a 53 percent approval rating versus Steinbrueck's 36 percent.

Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said the chancellor has "no preference for who runs against her" in the 2013 campaign.

A native of the rich northern port of Hamburg and once prime minister of Germany's most populous state, the western industrial powerhouse of North Rhine-Westphalia, Steinbrueck has never won a major election. He took over as state premier in mid-term. And, at the federal level, it was Steinmeier who was the SPD candidate against Merkel in 2009. He suffered a crushing defeat in which the SPD vote hit a postwar low of 23 percent.

The outspoken Steinbrueck has vowed that he will never again serve in a Merkel cabinet. He seems likely to resist a revival of the grand coalition, in which the SPD was junior partner - an experience which saw the party's popularity ravaged.

TAKING ON THE BANKS

Steinbrueck's launch this week of proposals for tough new restrictions on the banking sector have mollified some critics on the left wing of the SPD.

"Steinbrueck has taken a big step in our direction by being very bold in taking on the powerful and aggressive bank lobby," said Ernst Dieter Rossmann, a leader of the SPD left in the Bundestag lower house. "He's got our full support on that."

As Germany's oldest active party celebrates its 150th anniversary next year, it stands at around 26 percent in opinion polls compared with 38 percent for the Christian Democrats.

But the poor standing of Merkel's centre-right partners, the Free Democrats who are languishing at 4 percent, may force her to seek another coalition partner - possibly into an alliance with the SPD or, somewhat less likely, with the Greens.

The SPD insists its goal is to lead the next government with the Greens. Together they score about 43 percent in polls and would need about 47 percent of the vote to form a parliamentary majority. Parties with less than 5 percent get no seats at all.

Steinbrueck hopes to tap into public anger at banks' perceived recklessness and culpability for the financial crisis.

"This is not about destroying the financial system, rather it is about stabilizing it and preventing future excesses, and preventing any repeat of what we have seen in the past few years," he said when presenting his banking plan this week.

If Steinbrueck wins office he would seek a special bailout fund for banks, financed by banks themselves so that taxpayers no longer have to rescue the financial sector.

In proposals criticized by Deutsche Bank, he also wants to separate banks' retail and investment banking operations in order to safeguard household depositors' money.

The pro-euro SPD has supported Merkel's response to the euro zone crisis but Steinbrueck favors even deeper integration in Europe, such as common debt issuance in the currency bloc. This is firmly opposed by Merkel and unpopular with many Germans.

Steinbrueck, endorsed by both living former SPD chancellors - Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schroeder - is a straight talker with a record of verbal clashes, at home and abroad. The Swiss took exception to him likening them to "Indians" fleeing the cavalry during a row about tax havens. And current finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble responded to his heckling in parliament last year by telling him to "learn some manners".

A senior official who knows him well said: "Steinbrueck says what he thinks. Ninety percent of the time it's a strength.

"The other 10 percent it gets him in trouble."

It is unclear he will change his style to lead the campaign. An avid chess player, Steinbrueck once said of his style on the board: "I often play very impulsively."

Real Estate Market Outlook in The Philippines | EconMatters

By Jona Jones

Countless property builders and owners who tender rental apartments and condominiums are still having a crucial time to fill vacancies. It is certain that the industry is not up till now, in good state. And because of this, a lot of establishments are being implicated with the disintegration of economy - either large or small. But in terms of the leasing services in the Philippine real estate setting, reports say that it has increased a great deal.?

As what Global Property Guide stated,
?Property prices in the Philippines may have yet to go back to the pre-crisis levels, but due to the growth experienced by the industry, these would regain lost ground.?? The Philippines leasing services has kept the local property markets competitive with the recent interest rate cuts initiated by the central bank. The benchmark rates, according to property consultant Colliers International-Manila, will be beneficial to the property markets currently driven by local demand because of the affordable payment schemes and low-interest rates offered by banks and other home financing firms. With this account, how did then the Philippine real estate market renting services managed to survive? ?this derogatory economic condition? Let us dig deeper.

Possible Reasons

1.? ?Restructured Amenities and Facilities. In a local administered analysis, it was discovered that almost 80 percent of home buyers are searching for relaxing abode. Home builders in the Philippines had focused on providing comforting amenities in their communities. This way, residents would not need to travel away from the urban just to unwind. House developers have brought resort-like theme environment to their properties. The state of the cityscape is often a reliable determinant of progress, especially in developing countries such as the Philippines.? Vibrant activity in the property sector manifested through construction of new infrastructure confirms the flow of investment throughout the industry as well as the local economy.??

2.???Providing Lease Investment Plans. This is a convincing advertising method that the Philippine property builders did to acquire more consumers. This plan involves the resident paying a choice fee to obtain the right to purchase the condo at an agreed price at some point of time in future. Most of the time, this type of advertising method is being availed by couples who want to have a property but cannot avail on their present financial situation. Usually the rent contract is up to two years, depending on what the landlord and the tenant have agreed.??

3.???? Security and Safety. The planet we live in is unsurprisingly full of worries. As criminal rate heightens, more and more people are influenced to buy or rent on gated residential communities. A residential community that has 24 hour security protection, equipped with guards and surveillance cameras, is preferred by many as it offers more security and safety.??

Also, as the country is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is crucial that people are ready for sudden natural upheavals. Over the recent years, neighboring countries have been shaken by earthquakes that brought appalling effects to their infrastructures as well as their people.?With such adversity knocking at the doorstep, home builders had ensured that the structures and edifices on their developments are ready for this - designed to strictly adhere to global standards in order to endure different environmental challenges, in turn of giving its residents the peace of mind in knowing that their homes are reliable.??

4.? ??Larger Apartments. The need to bigger room is in demand especially that an average family household in the Philippines counts to 5- 6 members. The role of the extended family in the country has aggravated and the stress of acculturation has compelled people to either buy or rent a larger area. The Philippine property rental market deserves a second look these days as it is now one of the top assets to hold as investment in the country; besides being bullish on the Philippine main index stocks, peso and fixed income-related investments, property holdings in both residential and commercial space are good to buy and keep. The Glam Fairy's Baby Shower!!! | The Glam Fairy ? Alexa Prisco ...

As a person who has never really had an over the top party I wanted my baby shower to be the exception to the rule! ?Was I totally shocked when I found out I was pregnant? ?Who isn?t?? ?I mean finding out that you are responsible for another human being is such an overwhelming feeling. ?But that fear transformed into an incredible desire for me to educate myself on everything mom related. ?And the process of learning about babies, childbirth, and everything you need to take care of them is not an easy one. ?Every mom wants to have the safest stroller, the strongest crib, BPA free toys? the list goes on. ?That said, registering and finding what products would be best for me was made a great deal easier by the INCREDIBLE people at Buy Buy Baby. ?They literally gave me a personal shopper who walked me through the store and explained the difference between every stroller, every high chair and let me know each and every product I would need to make sure I was prepared for my baby!

I digress? the process of registering of course made me realize that I needed to have a baby shower. ?But I didn?t want to have the traditional VFW hall, baked ziti heated with a steno can shower? I wanted to have a celebration! ?I wanted to have a fun interactive party where guests had cool things to do, interactive stations, games? I wanted it to be gorgeous and elegant but not pretentious! ?I wanted fabulous food and delicious desserts without the white gloves.

With this extremely abstract idea in mind I had my assistant/ marketing director Melissa go on the hunt for an event planner that fit the bill. ?Well the puzzle piece fit perfectly with Kim Myl from Lulu?s inspirations. ?After our first meeting I knew that this would be the baby shower of my dreams!

Kim made this process the polar opposite of what event planning has been for me in the past. ?She made it so much fun! ?Every day we brainstormed fun, fantastic ways to bring this shower to life? and she embraced all my insane ideas! ?I say ?Kim I want a laundry line hung across the party with all baby clothes!? and she makes it work!

Becoming a mom is very scary? and the process of making sure you are totally prepared is of course cushioned by the traditional baby shower. ?As a person who likes to redefine traditions and customs, I really feel that Kim let me be the co-pilot in navigating what would be the most wonderful magical party I have ever had! ?I am very thankful to her for being present during this time in my life and making this process so creative, fun, and fabulous!

Okay so let me tell you about this shower! ?We basically wanted to have a whimsical, fun, elegant, dramatic space for guests to just relax and enjoy. ?Every time I see a gorgeous party I feel like the guests are in metaphorical wool turtle necks! ?Its like they cant relax and have fun or even touch anything! ?I wanted to have just as much visual drama as all the gorgeous events you see in magazines without the nose in the air attitude.

Again, I digress. ?We had the party in the event space of the building Danny and I live in. ?I knew that my friends and family were super excited for Baby McKayla, so I wanted to just be able to put all the gifts in the elevator and not the back of a U-Haul. ?The space wasnt easy to work with. ?Although it has a gorgeous backdrop of the hudson river and the Manhattan sky line the furniture and decor isnt the easiest to work with. ?It has a bar and kitchen which was great for what we needed but the huge pool table and bold patterns in the furniture didn?t help us. ?Kim just decided to embrace it and make it work!

We had three gorgeous tables from Valley Tent Rentals with dramatic black linens. ?Against the black was a gorgeous black and white damask runner highlighted with an incredible use of mirrors, candles, and rose petals by Karma Flowers. ?It truly warmed up the space and created a very loungey NY feel.

One of the biggest hurdles we had was the fact that the room was open to the entrance of my building and I really wanted to create a divided space? with the use of white pipe and drape and gorgeous pink uplighting, Vincent Paul Music and Entertainment created a complete room rather than just an open space. ?It also created a super dramatic entrance for guests! ?The concierge told me that people were stopping outside asking how we divided the room like that! ?You can see the pipe and drape behind me in this picture.

The food was beyond incredible! ?I feel like everything was re-invented. ?A twist on traditional foods. ?The salad was like a sculpture. ?I didn?t even know services like this existed by Elegant Affairs basically came in with a chef, a captain, a bartender, and two waiters. ?Even though it was a buffet it was the most assisted buffet I have ever seen with tastiest food I have ever had! ?The appetizers were in oversized Martini centerpieces ? we had grilled pita bread with mediterranean hummus, Crudite Vegtables with Spinach Aioli. ?The lunch was Turkey on Mini Croissonts, Parmesan crusted chicken stacks with burrata cheese, garden salad bouquets? the list just goes on and on! ?It was incredible!?

?

?

?

?

?

And of course what is an incredible mean without an incredible dessert to follow! ?One of the biggest hits was ?the ice cold shots of pink milk with a donut on the top! ?We had gorgeous Alice and Wonderland cupcakes from A Cake Dream that really added the level of whimsy we were looking for. ?Cake pops from I Love Cake Pops gave guests a fun treat to go home with! ?They were a fabulous pink with chocolate inside! ?Mini Buns from Juns Buns in tons of flavors gave guest yet another incredible option for dessert.

One of my favorite parts of the party was the Candy Bar by RSVP to me! ?This was such a hit with all my family members who have just as much as a sweet tooth as I do. ?An incredible interactive way for guests to have fun and embrace their inner child! ?I loved the oversized vintage candy jars with customized labels and fun black damask bags for guests to fill that said ?Alexa?s Baby Shower!?

As if all this wasn?t enough? there were super fun customized games for guests! ?Scratch offs and crossword puzzles from Inklings Paperie pulled out a competitive edge for my friends and family to win all the fun prizes we had! ?Inklings also created custom ?Its a girl? tags for our baby pink OPI nail polish favors. ?

This was by far the most wonderful amazing party I have ever attended and to be the host of it really makes me proud. ?I am very grateful to Kim for making the very first celebration of my daughter coming into this world beyond beautiful. ?To me it redefined the word ?celebration?? it allowed me to understand just how loved McKayla Olivia Ziegler is.

Thank you to all the incredible vendors that made this party a success!

Small Business Week ? Scrapbooking at the kitchen table ...

Todays post for Small Business Week is by Kerry who recently set up Scrapbookerry, selling handmade keepsakes for gifts and special occasions. Here she explains to us what scrapbooking is all about and how she found her niche.

?????????????????????????????????????-

I run Scrapbookerry, and have been since 2011, but that isn?t the start of my story. I have always loved photography and came across a very raw form of scrapbooking for the very first time when I was still at school, my friends and I used to cover exercise books and write our favourite songs in the books and add pictures from the various parties and sleepovers that we attended and give to each other at the end of the school years. It was great fun but once I left school I never did anything like it again.

Although I did carry on taking lots of pictures and was obsessed with my camera and the way my photos were stored.

Six years ago an American friend invited me to a home scrapbooking party, at this evening we had to take 6 pictures and we made a scrapbook page with these pictures. She taught us about the use of acidic products against our photos, why pictures turn yellow, in those sticky albums and what is good for a photo and what is bad for a photo. I was instantly hooked. Anyone that knows me knows that if there is a fire in my house you get out my photos! It is one of the most important items I own bar my family. So to learn all this information about how to keep these pictures save had me hooked.

Before I knew it scrapbooking was a hobby that was turning into an obsession. I loved organising my photos, and getting them all into safe albums. As soon as I found out we were having our first baby I knew that this child?s love was going to be scrapbooked and I could not wait to get started. To date I think I have over 7000 photos of my son, he is nearly four and albums and albums started not all completed I have to confess of different things and events that have happened in his short little life.

Once he was born, I had a perfect reason to develop my scrapbooking into mini albums, as these were perfect presents for grandparents, aunties and uncles, godparents and friends who live far away. I could make gorgeous squash books instead of cards full of up to date pictures of my son so that all of our friends were up to date with his progress. I did this for about a year and then gradually friends and family were asking if I could make the same album that I had made for them so they could give it to their friend, grandparent, or auntie and uncle.?

I carried on doing this for a couple of years before I really felt that actually there was a business in these albums it was a slow progress. But the requests were getting bigger and I was also being asked to make things for big events, for new babies, children?s christening and naming days and also to make one off handmade pieces for peoples weddings. These are all events that people want to record in their lives they never want to forget these moments and I love to help people to keep these memories alive with items that are unique to them, because they have been custom made and are all made in photo safe products that will keep the photos in their best condition for as long as possible. To me that is the best that I can give people, keeping their memories alive for future generations.?

Death of rebel who caught Gaddafi stokes Libya tensions

MISRATA, Libya (Reuters) - One of the Libyan rebels who helped capture Muammar Gaddafi in a drain pipe was buried early on Wednesday after his relatives said he had been shot and tortured in a rival town.

The death of Omran Shaban on Monday again highlighted the struggle of Libya's new leaders to rein in armed groups and could further stoke tensions between the towns of Misrata and Bani Walid, which backed opposing sides in the 2011 conflict.

Shaban shot to fame when he was seen in pictures grabbing Gaddafi on October 20. before the former Libyan leader was killed in his home town of Sirte.

According to his relatives, Shaban was kidnapped by armed men in July close to Bani Walid while on his way back to Misrata after he had been on government business in western Libya to calm clashes there. Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold, lies some 140 km (90 miles) from Misrata.

"He was kidnapped on his way back by some criminal group," his brother Walid said. "The lower part of his body had gunshot wounds and he was tortured."

Shaban was freed earlier this month after mediation efforts by Mohammed Magarief, leader of the ruling national congress. But he was in critical condition and died in Paris on Monday.

While Misrata spent weeks under siege by Gaddafi's forces during last year's fighting, Bani Walid was one of the last towns to fall to the rebels.

The renewed tensions between Misrata and Bani Walid come at a difficult time for Libyan leaders, trying to impose order on armed groups after the killing of the U.S. ambassador in a fatal assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 11.

Hundreds attended funeral prayers for Shaban in a Misrata football stadium.

His brother Hussein complained that the Libyan authorities did nothing to help Shaban.

"Libya was declared liberated of Gaddafi's rule on October 23 last year. It isn't," he said.

The national congress has ordered the defence and interior ministries to find those who abducted Shaban, calling him a "brave hero".

In July, fighters from Misrata threatened to attack Bani Walid after two journalists from their town were detained there. The journalists were eventually released after mediation by the authorities.

Obama summons world leaders to reject extremism

(AP) ? Confronting global tumult and Muslim anger, President Barack Obama exhorted world leaders Tuesday to stand fast against violence and extremism, arguing that protecting religious rights and free speech must be a universal responsibility and not just an American obligation.

"The impulse towards intolerance and violence may initially be focused on the West, but over time it cannot be contained," Obama warned the U.N. General Assembly in an urgent call to action underscored by the high stakes for all nations.

The gloomy backdrop for Obama's speech ? a world riven by deadly protests against an anti-Islamic video, by war in Syria, by rising tension over a nuclear Iran and more ? marked the dramatic shifts that have occurred in the year since the General Assembly's last ministerial meeting, when democratic uprisings in the Arab world created a sense of excitement and optimism. Obama had tough words for Iran and condemned anew the violence in Syria as Bashar al-Assad tries to retain power.

Six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, an unmistakable campaign element framed Obama's speech as well: The president's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, has tried to cast him as a weak leader on the world stage, too quick to apologize for American values.

Romney, speaking at a Clinton Global Initiative forum just miles from the U.N., avoided direct criticism of Obama in deference to the apolitical settings of the day, but he said he hoped to return a year later "as president, having made substantial progress" on democratic reforms.

Obama, likewise, avoided direct politicking in his speech but offered a pointed contrast to his GOP opponent's caught-on-tape comment that there is little hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

"Among Israelis and Palestinians," Obama said, "the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on a prospect of peace."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's opening state-of-the-world speech to the General Assembly's presidents, prime ministers and monarchs sketched the current time as one when "too often, divisions are exploited for short-term political gain" and "too many people are ready to take small flames of indifference and turn them into a bonfire."

The leaders are assembled here as anger still churns over a made-in-America video that mocked the Prophet Muhammad. The video helped touch off protests throughout the Muslim world that have left at least 40 people dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

Obama, a onetime professor of constitutional law, delivered what amounted to a lecture on what he presented as the bedrock importance of free speech, even if it comes at a price.

He stressed that just as the "cruel and disgusting" video did not reflect U.S. values, the backlash against it did not represent the views of most Muslims. Still, he said, "the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and the Arab world that is moving towards democracy."

Obama said the notion of controlling information is obsolete in the Internet age, "when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button." But he said leaders must be swift to respond to those who would answer hateful speech with violence and chaos.

In his last international address before the November elections, the president had strong words for the leaders in Iran and Syria but broke no new ground on any actions the U.S. might take.

He warned that while there is still hope of resolving the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy, "that time is not unlimited." Without laying out specifics, he added: "The United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in an interview with The Associated Press, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambitions and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country was better off than it was when he took office in 2005. And he said a new world order needs to emerge, away from American "bullying" and domination.

"God willing, a new order will come together and we'll do away with everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad said. "Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying."

"Bullying must come to an end. Occupation must come to an end," he said in a wide-ranging interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

As for the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, "The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence."

In the AP interview, Ahmadinejad said Iran was one of nearly a dozen countries forming a new contact group to try to end the 18-month-old civil war in Syria. The group would include 10 or 11 countries in the Middle East and elsewhere and meet in New York "very soon," Ahmadinejad said.

Obama's defense of free speech was respectfully received by world leaders. Yet it was clear that different understandings abound on the proper exercise of free expression.

The foreign minister of Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, said Obama's speech was a "clarion call" for all nations to reject intolerance, calling it "an issue that galvanizes all of us." But Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.

Dina Zakaria, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood's political party Freedom and Justice, said cultural differences between the U.S. and the Muslim and Arab world over the limitations of freedom of expression will persist.

"No one can argue against freedom of expression, but the Western understanding of it is different from ours," she said. "Will this freedom allow for contempt of religion? For us it is different. For us it is a red line as Muslims and Christians as well."

Obama did not hesitate to underline some of the hopeful developments in the world under his watch.

"The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home," he said. "We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014. Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals."

In one lighter moment in a somber speech, Obama drew laughter from the Assembly with one comment in his remarks on free speech: "I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day."

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Pakistani police opened fire on rioters who were torching a cinema during a protest against an anti-Islam film Friday, killing one man on a holiday declared by the government so that people could demonstrate against the video.

Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani television station, was killed when bullets hit his vehicle in the northwest city of Peshawar, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who was also sitting in the car at the time. The TV channel showed footage of Amir at the hospital as doctors tried to save him. It also showed the windshield of the vehicle, shattered by several gunshots.

The film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad has sparked unrest in many parts of the Muslim world over the past 10 days, and the deaths of at least 31 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been linked to the violence. Much of the anger has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the U.S. and American officials have criticized it for insulting Muslims.

Pakistan has experienced nearly a week of violent rallies against the film in which three people have died. The government declared Friday to be a national holiday and encouraged people to protest peacefully.

Police could not immediately be reached for comment about the death of Amir.

The cinema where police opened fire was one of two in Peshawar that several hundred protesters ransacked and set ablaze. A similar number of protesters also torched a toll booth on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad. Police fired tear gas at the angry crowds in both cities.

On Thursday, the government was forced to call in army troops to protect the capital after more than 2,000 stone-throwing demonstrators tried to reach the U.S. Embassy inside a guarded enclave that houses foreign missions and government offices. Security was tight in Islamabad again Friday, as police set up scores of shipping containers to prevent protesters from reaching the diplomatic enclave.

The government also blocked cell phone service in 15 major cities, including Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, to prevent militants from using phones to detonate bombs during the protests, said an Interior Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. Service is scheduled to be restored at 6 p.m. local time, he said.

U.S. officials have struggled to explain to the Muslim world how they strongly disagree with the anti-Islam film but have no ability to block it because of the freedom of speech in the country.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf called on the international community Friday to pass laws to prevent people from insulting the Prophet Muhammad, saying "an attack on the holy Prophet is an attack on the core belief of 1.5 billion Muslims."

"If denying the Holocaust is a crime, then is it not fair and legitimate for a Muslim to demand that denigrating and demeaning Islam's holiest personality is no less than a crime?" Ashraf said during a speech to religious scholars and international diplomats in Islamabad.

Denying the Holocaust is a crime in Germany, but not in the U.S.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also lashed out at the West over the film and the publication of caricatures of the prophet by a French satirical weekly.

"In return for (allowing) the ugliest insults to the divine messenger, they ? the West ? raise the slogan of respect for freedom of speech," said Ahmadinejad during a speech at a military parade in the capital, Tehran.

He said this explanation was "clearly a deception."

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, in a bid to tamp down public rage over the film, is spending $70,000 to air an ad on Pakistani television that features President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton denouncing the video. Their comments, which are from previous public events in Washington, are in English but subtitled in Urdu, the main Pakistani language.

In Indonesia, the U.S. closed its diplomatic missions Friday due to demonstrations over the film. Small and mostly orderly protests were held outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and in the cities of Surabaya and Medan. No violence was reported.

In Germany, the Interior Ministry said it was postponing a poster campaign aimed at countering radical Islam among young people due to heightened tensions caused by the online video insulting Islam. It said posters for the campaign ? in German, Turkish and Arabic ? were meant to go on display in German cities with large immigrant populations on Friday but are now being withheld because of the changed security situation.

The ministry said the campaign will continue online and in selected magazines.

Germany is home to an estimated 4 million Muslims and authorities have become concerned about home-grown Islamic extremists.
